How to Build Credit With No Credit History

03:53
For more information on how to build credit, visit http://www.gobankingrates.com Whether you're a young adult applying for credit for the first time, or you just haven't used credit in a while, when you finally do want to get credit it can be a frustrating process. You need a credit history to build credit, but no one will approve you for new credit without a credit history -- a chicken and the egg scenario. Who knows how these rules came to be, but we'll show you how to work with them. DON'TS to Avoid When Building Your Credit DON'T apply for new credit cards, even credit cards offered to you at retail stores. If more than one creditor has decided that you aren't creditworthy, chances are the rest of the creditors will reject you too. And every time you send in a new application, your credit score goes down a little bit. DON'T bother getting a loan with a co-signer just for the sake of building your credit. Before the recession, this was a popular tactic that a lot of people used and that worked fairly well. But these days, creditors are a lot more interested in you proving that you are responsible with your money, not just your parents or your good friends. So getting a co-signed loan or being added as an authorized user on someone else's credit card are going to do little to nothing to build your credit up. Apply for a Secured Credit Card Secured cards are great because they prevent you from getting into trouble with debt since you provide the cash up front. Then, when you sue the card, you are essentially using up money that you've already deposited ahead of time. Plus, your card activity is usually reported to the three credit bureaus, helping you raise your credit score and build credit history on your credit report. Before you select a secured card, keep these tips in mind: 1. Make sure that the activity is in fact reported to the credit bureaus. Most, but not all secured cards, do this. 2. Make your payments on time! The easiest way to ruin your credit is to make late payments. 3. Don't max your card out. Try to keep your credit utilization at 30% for the best results and keep in mind that your total credit limit will probably be fairly small. 4. Choose a card with low fees. Some charge ridiculous fees that just aren't worth it. 5. Be patient and diligent. It's going to take 6 months to a year to build up your credit history, so be prepared to wait a while before applying for a traditional credit card or a loan. One secured card that does report to the credit bureaus, charges relatively low fees, and consistently get positive reviews from actual account holders is the Orchard Bank secured card. Unfortunately, it's really easy to destroy your credit with a handful of bad decisions. But building up your credit history from scratch can take a very long time. That's why you have to remain patient and diligent. If you stick with it, you'll be glad you did. How to Use Paypal: Avoiding Fees and Scams

However, conducting financial transactions online does pose a few risks, so I'm going to give you some tips for making your transactions go as smoothly as possible. PayPal Fees -Always free for buyers -Usually free for money transfers, unless you're using a debit card instead of a bank account or transferring money internationally -For sellers, there's a 30 cent fee plus 2.9% of the total transaction amount. Sellers, keep fees in mind when pricing your item, so that you aren't taken aback by fees once you complete the sale. Unfortunately, eBay no longer allows sellers to leave feedback for buyers. But you can still look at the general feedback for a potential buyer to get an idea of how reliable they'll be. If you do run into a problem selling on eBay, you can use the Seller Reporting Hub to report things like an unpaid item, feedback extortion, or any other issues you run into with a buyer. If you're not doing business on eBay, you can use communities and forums to find out if your buyer has a bad reputation. Completing the Transaction Don't keep your buyer waiting. If they have any questions for you, make sure you answer them promptly so the transaction isn't delayed. And as soon as you receive payment, put the item in the mail. As a seller, it's also strongly recommended that you purchase either tracking or delivery confirmation so that you can be sure the package gets where you intended. Delivery Confirmation through the US Postal Service is only 85 cents, and if your package does get lost in the mail, you can avoid any discrepancies. Protect Yourself and Avoid Scams Make sure that the billing address matches the address that you're shipping to. If your buyer asks you to ship the item outside the country, beware. This is a common PayPal scam because the seller is only protected against a loss if they ship to the address that's on file for that buyer. Watch out for this suspicious buyer behavior or requests: -Wanting to rush a shipment at any cost -Sending partial payments from multiple PayPal accounts -Not making their payment in full You can use PayPal to send and receive money for a variety of reasons, not just when using eBay.

How to Raise Your Credit Score Fast

03:27
READ on GOBankingRates: How to Rebuild Credit: http://bit.ly/2s3kfQk See the 10 best checking accounts of 2015 here: http://www.gobankingrates.com/banking/10-checking-accounts-2015/ More than half of all Americans don’t know their credit score. Here’s why that’s a problem: Your credit score is used by a host of people -- from your bank to your landlord -- to judge whether you should be allowed something you want, like, say, a credit card. So the worse your credit score is, the less likely you are to get these things. Things like: -A good auto loan -A mortgage! -A higher credit limit -A lower credit card rate -Insurance -Utilities! -A job -- that’s right, employers see your credit score. -A girlfriend. Yep, a study actually found women care more about a good credit score than physical attraction in a partner. So, yeah. Your credit score is important. Today, we're going to show you five tips to raise your score by 100 points -- fast. Check it out. Robert Kiyosaki's New Financial Advice

01:42
Read More: https://www.gobankingrates.com/net-worth/business-people/10-best-money-tips-robert-kiyosaki-all-time/ As part of our Financial Literacy Movement, we asked personal finance guru Robert Kiyosaki for the number one mistake people make with their money. Known for his unconventional wisdom, Kiyosaki believes in an approach to building wealth that bucks traditionalism and encourages entrepreneurship. Robert Kiyosaki often talks about the "rat race" of working all your life and struggling to save, much like his own father, Poor Dad. On the streets of New York, Kiyosaki observed, "This is New York City. I love this place, I went to school here. When you look here, you see ungodly wealth. And then you see 8 million people walking by, walking by, and trapped in the rat race of life. And they're getting wiped out. I mean, they work hard, they pay more in taxes, they get deeper in debt, and they have almost no future." As Robert walked through the streets on Manhattan, he observed the fast-paced city and shared that one of the biggest mistakes someone can make financially is getting left behind as times change. Robert said: "Every 500 years the world goes through a tremendous change. Like in 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue and the Industrial Age was born. And then the year 2000, the World Wide Web comes on. So here we are in the Information Age. I mean, look at this: Talk about large-screen television, and look at the bright lights and all this. So the problem is that people are still operating by Industrial Age ideas such as a job for life, job security, the company's going to take care of me. Those are obsolete ideas. If you look at what's going on today, things are fast, things are moving. If you're moving too slow, you're wiped out. And that's why today you've really got to be smart. You've got to think differently, think quicker. You've got to make changes quicker. Because this is how fast things are changing — this is the Information Age. If you're operating by old ideas, you're obsolete." Robert's philosophy hinges on the idea that your money should be working for you, not the other way around. He shared an interesting perspective on the value of time and money. "Well, I kind of wonder why people work so hard for money, and at the same time say, 'I'm not interested in money,' or 'Money's not that important to me.' I mean, how can a person spend most of their waking hours working for money and then say it's not that important? It doesn't make any sense to me. That's kind of hypocritical."

How to Spot Equity Stripping, Mortgage Scams, and Loan Modification Scams

05:08
Take our Mortgage Mogul Quiz to test your financial knowledge: http://www.gobankingrates.com/quizzes/financial-literacy-mortgage/ In light of the housing market meltdown and the great recession, consumers need to protect themselves from mortgage scams now more than ever. Mortgage scammers can get pretty creative, but here are the top 3 scams you should know about. Scam 1 - Equity Stripping/Bailouts An individual or company will contact you if you're at risk for foreclosure, offering to pay off the lender and take over the deed for the house. They promise to charge you a low rent while you get your finances together and that they will allow you to buy the house back from them at a later date. In reality, the scammer usually gouges the rent and ends up forcing you out of your home anyway. The scammer gets away with not only your home, but also all the equity it has built up over time. Scam 2 - Phantom Help In Phantom Help, an individual or company contacts you when you're at risk for foreclosure. The scammer offers to contact your lender on your behalf and file special paperwork to help you stay in your home. This service comes at an extremely high rate, and most of the work they do for you, you can do yourself. In this scam, the scammer doesn't get away with your home, but they do rip you off for the cost of their "services" and you end up losing your home to foreclosure anyway. Scam 3 - Bait and Switch In the Bait and Switch scam, the scammer deceives you by promising to reduce your mortgage rate or monthly payment. In the process of closing the deal, the scammer sneaks in paperwork signing the deed of the home over to the scammer. In this case, you again lose your home to the scammer under the guise of being bailed out and paying rent. You continue to pay monthly on a property you no longer own. If you are at risk for foreclosure, keep in mind that this information may be listed publicly, allowing scam artists to contact you. In general, keep yourself safe by avoiding anyone who offers you to "rescue" you from an underwater mortgage or "pull strings" on your behalf. Netflix vs. Hulu Plus vs. Amazon Prime: Which streaming service is best?

04:03
For more tips, visit http://www.gobankingrates.com Going to the movies is expensive, and so is paying for premium cable, so it's no wonder cheaper video streaming services are rising in popularity. Sure you have to wait a while to see certain films, but it sure beats the price of instant gratification. If you're tired of spending your entire entertainment budget going to see just one movie, consider saving money with one a streaming service like Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime. Netflix Netflix used to offer both physical DVDs and online streaming, but has recently done away with the DVD service. They currently offer thousands of movies and TV shows, though the selection tends to be older with few new releases. You can stream video to your TV through most major gaming consoles like Wii and Xbox, as well as a number of Blu-Ray devices, HDTVS, and streaming players... You can also purchase a special device from Netflix that will allow you watch on your television if you don't have the proper equipment. It's also possible to stream videos on your computer or mobile device such as iPad or Kindle Fire. Netflix costs $7.99 a month and you can watch as many movies and TV shows as you want. They also offer a free 1-month trial. Hulu The free version of Hulu is pretty limited -- you can watch up to 5 tv shows per month and streaming is only available over your computer. However, the paid version known as Hulu Plus is much more expansive as far as selection and streaming capabilities. Hulu Plus allows you to watch all current-season episodes of a variety of popular TV shows, as well as hundreds of older shows. You can also stream full length movies -- currently, there's a selection of about 2,500 films to choose from, though again, they tend to be an older and somewhat obscure assortment. Like Netflix, you can stream over just about every major gaming console, Blu-ray or streaming player, mobile device, etc. The cost is also $7.99, though you will have to sit through some commercials. Hulu offers a free 1-week trial. Amazon Prime At first glance, Amazon Prime's video streaming service seems pretty inferior compared to Netflix and Hulu. The selection is small and it streams across fewer platforms. However, there are a couple of things Prime offers that the others can't. First, $79 per year seems like a lot of money, until you do the math -- Paying $7.99 per month for Netflix or Hulu means you're spending $96 per year on the services. Secondly, membership to Amazon Prime gives you a substantial shipping discount on qualifying Amazon purchases, as well as instant access to thousands of Kindle books. The video streaming is really like an additional perk. I would recommend that anyone looking strictly for the best service for streaming movies choose Netflix. If you're more interested in staying up on the latest TV shows, go with Hulu Plus. Those who are frequent Amazon shoppers should choose Prime simply for the great deal on shipping, with video streaming as an added bonus.
