Afghanistan's Secret Billion Dollar Emerald Mines

Hidden Gems: After suffering the Soviets, the Taliban, and the War on Terror, Afghanistan has had its share of turmoil; but can 1,000 billion dollars worth of emeralds lift Afghanistan out of poverty? He's a Frenchman who first came to Afghanistan to train Afghan security services before venturing into the emerald trade. He sees a huge chance here to exploit a market that could easily increase in value twenty or thirty-fold, but the obstacles are not inconsiderable. Just to get to the mines Raphael has to travel the 150 Kilometres from Kabul to Panjshir, right through Taliban kidnap country. When he gets there he finds an industry in the dark ages, where homemade pyrotechnics are exploded in poorly dug mineshafts, killing many miners and ruining the quality of up to 75% of the stones they dig. "If you see the damage being done to these stones... so much is lost", Yama Torabi from Integrity Watch Afghanistan tells us. The government here remains hopelessly out of touch with the industry that "still (uses) a mining law adopted 100 years ago". But as the country prepares for elections and Europeans like Raphael open up the gem trade here, could this be a beacon of hope for the future? "Emerald mining in Zambia" by GIA

09:39
With that new GIA Field video you will be taken with the GIA Field Expedition (FE56) that took place in September 2014 in Zambia. You will surely feel the lure of emerald—central Africa’s green treasure—in this short GIA video. First, you’ll visit the Musakashi, Zambia, emerald mining area where mining is carried out by local people with simple hand tools. Next, you’ll travel with Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu and the GIA team to Zambia’s Kafubu area, one of Africa’s oldest gem-mining areas. “There are maybe 400 mines, and maybe less than 10 are active,” says Pardieu. While there, you’ll witness several active emerald mines. Some are very small-scale and operated by local people, while some, like the MIKU and the KAGEM mines, are very large. The latter is probably the largest colored gemstone mining pit in the world. In this video, you’ll view the entire KAGEM operation—a modern, highly sophisticated mechanized pit mine. As you stand on the rim of the pit, a ripple of explosions blasts ore for processing. You will witness workers recovering emeralds from the pit. You’ll also venture underground into Gemfields’ exploratory underground workings and see the firm’s secure processing and sorting facility. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel, Field Gemologist Andy Lucas, Gems & Gemology Technical Editor Dr. Tao Hsu, and Field Gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.

Mining for Emeralds in Brazil by GIA

02:32
http://gia.edu/gem-encyclopedia Mining for Emeralds in Brazil by GIA. Emerald gemstone has many special qualities. From Sao Paolo, Brazil, Sergio Martins discusses the emerald gemstone history, industry and how sourcing this precious stone is performed in Brazilian mines. He explains the different types of Brazilian mining systems that exist at different locations throughout the country. The Belmont mine has a large area and conducts open pit mining on a large scale. They have consistently produced this precious gemstone for 30 years. Sergio also discusses the Nova Era mine, different from the other emerald mines because it belongs to over 140 people. Located in the area of Garimpeiro, emerald mining in this region involves miners making shafts and looking for the vein that leads to a large concentration of emerald, a “pocket”. Mining can take up to few years before any emerald stones are discovered, but once found, they can produce up to 10 million dollars worth of emeralds in one pocket. Emeralds of Bahia, Brazil by GIA

02:55
http://gia.edu/gem-encyclopedia Emeralds of Bahia, Brazil by GIA. What is unique about a Bahia emerald? In this video, Sergio Martins discusses the distinguishing qualities of emerald gemstone from Bahia, Brazil. He talks about the emerald mine, three different emerald specimens, as well as the region of Bahia and the effects of the mine's presence. The Bahia mine is more than 60 years old and has become a very important source. It spans a large area where veins of emerald are up to 30 kilometers away from one another. Recently, it has produced an impressive quantity of emerald stone. Most are not gem quality, but the crystal size is generally large. There may be pieces of emerald up to 100 kilos. These lower-quality large emeralds are used for beads or carvings instead of gemstones. Most Mysterious Emerald And Precious Stone Discoveries

11:37
From the famed and mysterious Emerald Tablets to the one of the most rare diamonds on the whole planet, here are some of the most fascinating and incredible Emerald, Gem and Diamond Discoveries Ever Made. 7. Pylos Combat Agate In 2015, researchers in southwest Greece discovered an elaborate tomb. The 3,000 500 year old gravesite held the skeleton of a man who has since been dubbed the “Griffin Warrior” due to being buried with a plaque bearing an emblem of the mythological half lion- half eagle namesake creature. Alongside the warrior were dozens of rings and other jewelry pieces, plus a stunning bronze sword. While cleaning the recovered odds and ends, researchers discovered that a typically unexciting chunk of agate held something absolutely incredible: an intricately carved image. The piece is no more than one and a half inches in length yet somehow holds the portrait of a victorious warrior plunging his sword into a foe as another one lays by his feet. The full image can only be seen under a powerful photo-micropsy camera lense, causing researchers to question how the artist even made the tiny piece in the first place. Individual muscles can be seen in each of the figures, as can individual locks of hair! The piece is an example of the mind-bogglingly absolutely amazing craftsmanship that went into pieces of art and jewelry in ancient Greece. Images: 1 2 6. Helenite On May 18, 1980, an unthinkable natural disaster shook Washington state, destroying countless homes and businesses. Mount St. Helens erupted furiously, unleashing its volcanic fury on the usually peaceful surrounding towns. Ash and smoke was hurled over eighty thousand feet in the air from the peak of the ten thousand foot tall landmark from repeated blasts that have been compared in force to that produced by over one hundred nuclear bomb detonations. 1 hundred degree fahrenheit lava poured across the land, scorching the surrounding cities. Months later, during the clean up process, a sort of beauty within the beast was discovered: a clear, green gem known as Helenite in reference to its eruptive origin. As cleaners heated the volcanic rock that formed as the lava cooled, they were dazzled by the uncovered stones. Scientists tested the gems and believe that the mineral composites in the rocks around the volcano were a perfect formation that created Helenite on a fluke. Dubbed “America’s Emerald”, Helenite is surprisingly cheap, with a six carat piece costing around $150 while a comparable piece containing true emerald would set you back around $15,000. 5. Cullinan Diamond The average center stone diamond in an engagement ring weighs in at one to two carats with the total weight of the stones in the ring being under six carats. This alone can be quite a pricey set up, so one can only imagine the shock that came when miners discovered the Cullinan Diamond, a gem that clocks in at a whopping 3,106.75 carats. Known as the world’s largest gem-quality rough-bahstone ever found, the Cullinan Diamond was discovered on January 26, 1905 by miners of the in Cullinan, South Africa, a small town named for the occupying mining company’s chairman. Despite considerable interest, the diamond sat unsold until 1907 when the Transvaal Colony purchased it and presented it to King Edward VI for his 66th birthday. King Edward had the stone cut into over one hundred and five different pieces, the two largest of which are known as Cullinan I and Cullinan II. The first, also referred to as the the Great Star of Africa, is 530.4 carats and is known as the largest clear cut diamond in history. It rests at the head of the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross. Cullinan II, also known as the Second Star of Africa, weighs 317.4 carats and is mounted on the Imperial State Crown. Both gems are part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. All of the other fragments have gone to private collectors save for seven major diamond cuts, several brilliants, and a selection of unpolished fragments which reside with Queen Elizabeth II, who inherited them from Queen Mary. 4. The Pink Star 3. The Cursed Bahia Emerald 2. Blue Moon of Josephine Diamond 1. The Emerald Tablets

Emeralds bring hope to troubled Swat valley

Emeralds are one of the most valuable gemstones in the world, and at the Mingora mines in Pakistan there seem to be plenty of them. After being neglected for years, and looted by the now-departed Taliban, the mines have reopened. Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder reports from the Swat valley.

Emerald mining resumes in Pakistan

05:03
(20 Jun 2010) STORYLINE: An area of astounding natural beauty, the Swat Valley in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan is located around 160 km/100 miles from the capital Islamabad. A year after the Pakistani army ousted militants from these peaks, emerald miners are once again working in the Shamozai mountaintop mine once used by insurgents as a base. It's a sign of progress in a region struggling to recover from conflict. Dusty and exhausted, miners emerge from tunnels, blinking in the sunlight of this formerly Taliban-controlled valley. Gem mining, along with marble and granite quarrying, are some of the only industries save smuggling in many parts of the northwest. The United States is helping these sectors as part of a $7.5 billion package to create jobs in the region, dry up support for extremism and stop militants from returning. "The quality is triple A quality known in all the world," says mine owner Hikmat Ullah. He says there are acres of untapped reserves beneath the rocky, arid soil. Ullah employs around 30 men who work tunnels that zigzag some 60 feet into the mountain, following the emerald deposits wherever nature has left them. But production at Shamozai is threatened because of an ownership dispute that alleges Ullah mined hand-in-hand with the militants when they were in control, handing them over a chunk of the proceeds. Ullah denies the charges. Mining officials in Mingora declined to comment on those allegations and denied corruption within the industry. Swat's two other emerald mines remain closed amid allegations of chronic corruption and mismanagement that miners and gem traders say have dogged the industry since the early 1980s. Indeed, many say it was in better shape when the Taliban were in control of the valley. Aside from emeralds, gems locked away in Pakistani mountains include pink and golden topaz, aquamarine and many others. The business is worth an estimated $200 million a year. It's modest compared to neighbouring India, but with the potential for large growth. "The people who are working in (the) mine, this is our property. Whatever they dig out from (the) mine, we keep records of. Sometimes we earn up to 4 million rupees (50,000 US dollars) from stones (emeralds). We always get something almost daily. The record that we dug out is rupees 10 million (125,000 US Dollars) worth of emeralds in a day," says Haji Rasul Khan, President of the Mines Association. But due to a lack of skilled labour, most Pakistani stones are exported to Bangkok or Amsterdam, where teams of cutters polish and make them into much more valuable gems. A major focus of the U.S. aid is developing that side of the industry in Pakistan. It has trained dozens of men and women from the tribal regions in cutting and polishing and is establishing a centre for gem certification in Peshawar, the main northwestern town, something that would dramatically increase the value of the product. On the other side of the valley in Buner, a team of men are using Italian wire saws to cleave from a quarry what few in the region have ever seen: a perfectly-cut block of marble the size of a small car, its straight edges standing out against a backdrop of shattered and jagged rock. Almost all quarries in northwest Pakistan use explosives to extract the marble. It's a wasteful, dangerous technique used in few other places, because it produces irregularly-shaped stones that international buyers will not touch. Mine owner Taimur Khan spends around $7,000 monthly of his own money renting equipment from a Pakistani public-private partnership established with U.S. funds and expertise. The army has conducted operations against the Taliban in both regions since 2008 and say both are now cleared. Ethiopia, Land of origins Part I: Emeralds from Southern Ethiopia

06:34
In December 2017, we had our first visit to Ethiopia and we explored the Rift Valley and the southern part of the country to visit an interesting new emerald mining project by Gemfields located near Web village close to the small town of Dubuluk. The main goal was to collect samples, on site at the mines, for the Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT; http://www.danat.bh/ ) reference collection in Bahrain as Ethiopia is emerging as an interesting new source for gemstones. The Web village area started to produce emeralds in the early 2000 and stones started to reach the markets in small quantities (Cevalos & al, G&G, Fall 2012, G&G, "an emerald from ethiopia", pp. 219-220) but the production remained irregular. In 2013 WGM (Web Gemstone Mining) company was created as a partnership between a local investor and the local Web village community. In 2015 that local investor invited Gemfields into the project in order to develop the mine (More at: https://gemfields.com/our-mines-assets/new-projects/#accordion-1 ). Gemfields became the majority shareholder with the Web village community and the investor as partners. At the time of our visit in Dec 2017, the project was at the exploration stage. We could witness bulk sampling at the Dogogo pit. The company was working a pegmatite area that was rich in promising green beryl crystals. We collected some of the for the DANAT reference collection. The goal for WGM was to reach an emerald rich reaction zone between the pegmatite (source of beryllium) and a high grade metamorphic rock called TMS belt (for talc magnetite shist) that is the source for chromium. During our visit we could also witness the local market taking place each Wednesday at Web village that has turned, since the arrival of the mine, into one of the most important in the region due to the additional income generated by the local community since the opening of the mine. The general feeling we had after that first visit was that Ethiopia has a great potential to become a significant gem producer in the years to come.

Emerald Village Mines - Little Switzerland, NC - Epic Aerial Views

Here's a bit of aerial video at the Emerald Village in Little Switzerland, NC. The village is set up in an old feldspar mine on McKinney Mine Road. It's an interesting tourist destination if you enjoy minerals, and searching for gem stones. Before the Emerald Village was set up, my dad used to find aquamarine and other interesting mineral specimens among the rubble of the old McKinney Mine. My grandfather used to run a steam shovel there back in the 1930's. As a kid, this was one of my favorite places to play - a short bike ride from where I grew up in the Deer Lick Gap. Aquamarine's Color Range by GIA

01:59
http://gia.edu/gem-encyclopedia Aquamarine Color Range by GIA. March’s birthstone aquamarine is a popular gemstone among consumers, and comes in a variety of cuts, including cushion, emerald, and trillion. It is a color variety of the mineral beryl. Aquamarine color can vary from a moderately strong to medium dark and slightly greenish-blue color. It can also appear as a pale, watery blue. Fine aquamarine stone is a marriage between color and clarity. Aquamarine Crystals by GIA

01:30
http://gia.edu/gem-encyclopedia Aquamarine Crystals by GIA. What are aquamarine crystals? This video provides an in-depth look at the aquamarine gemstone in its crystal form. It discusses three magnificent examples of high-quality, rare aquamarine stone and their different qualities. The first is a specimen that displays intergrown aquamarine and pink beryl. This is a rare occurrence, as both colors beautifully intact. The second aquamarine crystal example is from Colombia, two columnar and prismatic aquamarine crystals that have grown together. The final example of a fine aquamarine crystal is from Brazil and weighs more than 300 carats. It features a noteworthy shape, with a more transparent section on the crystal. Aquamarine crystals range from tiny to very large, and some even weigh up to one hundred pounds. Cutting is important, as well-cut gems show brilliance in the aquamarine color. Giant green emerald found in Zambian mine - TomoNews

05:06
KAGEM, ZAMBIA — Gemfields, the world's largest producer of green stones, has discovered a giant, green emerald in Zambia. The emerald weighs more than 1.1 kilograms and was discovered in Kagem, the world's largest emerald mine located in Zambia. A statement released by Gemfields said that the emerald has "remarkable clarity and a perfectly balanced golden green hue." Emeralds in the Kagem mine were reportedly formed 450 million years ago due to a rare combination of in situ minerals and magma from the Earth's crust which then developed into emerald crystals. The gem is being called "Inkalamu" which means lion in the local Bemba language in Zambia. The uncut emerald was discovered in an open-pit mine on October 2 by a geologist and a veteran emerald miner. Several pieces are expected to be cut from the 5,655-carat emerald and will be auctioned in Singapore this month. Most of the emeralds in the world are mined from Zambia, Colombia and Brazil. As a result, emeralds are even more precious than diamonds due to their scarcity.
