NewsDepth - Buckeye Beat: Lake Erie’s salt mines

05:03
Our public television partners at WVIZ ideastream in Cleveland talk about salt and salt mines in this episode of NewsDepth. When Old Man Winter rears his icy head, there’s one thing that keeps Ohio from becoming a virtual slip’n’slide… A natural de-icer, over 17 million tons of rock salt was spread over roads and sidewalks in the United States during the particularly fierce winter of 2015. But where does it all come from? The answer might surprise you… Ohio is one of the top exporters of salt in the country…and it’s actually mined right under our noses in places like Cargill’s Whiskey Island Mine. The 12-square-mile mine lies just offshore of downtown Cleveland. Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes with a depth of about 56 feet near Cleveland – the salt mine lies about 1800 feet under the lake. A system of conveyor belts and elevators bring the salt to the surface. Left behind are gigantic pillars of salt – these support the weight of the thousands of feet of rock and lake above the mine. Engineers, like Bob, calculate the size and number of pillars needed to keep the mine safe. But wait. Let’s back up a minute – how did all this salt get here, almost 2000 feet under Lake Erie? To answer that question, we headed to Cleveland’s Museum of Natural History to talk to expert Harvey Webster. So, Ohio was tropical – oh yeah, and covered in a shallow sea. And its inhabitants are not the kind of thing you see strolling in downtown Cleveland today. Eventually, these tropical conditions – and some overgrown coral reeves caused the sea to dry up, leaving the salt behind. The salt mine looks like another world – and it really is one. It’s the remains of world that existed long before man. But even if you never get down to the mine, you’ll still see pieces of this world scattered on icy roads all winter long. https://www.facebook.com/laregiondocumental Observational documentary set in the desert regions of the copper mining industry in Northern Chile. The film delves into a yearly festival following three separate families of Andean origins who live and work in one of its most extreme mining cities. Told thru a combination of observational footage, dream sequences and archive, it delves into the relationship between Chile's enormous mining extraction and the families whose culture has inevitably been shaped by these forces.

Remote And ISOLATED Places In The World!

11:30
Check out these remote and isolated places on earth! From extreme cold temperatures to unbelievable amazing nature, these locations around the world are beautiful but hard to live in! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "FORBIDDEN Places You CANNOT Visit!" video here: https://youtu.be/JmluqmT3WTs Watch our "6 LOST Cities Around The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/0Jx6OToOXos Watch our "AMAZING Places Around The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/xdWeyQ86cPM 10. Oymyakon, Russia This town has a reputation of being the coldest inhabited town in the world! The average temperature is around -58 degrees, and it is completely dark for up to 21 hours a day during winter. But in 1933, the temperature dropped to a bone-chilling -90! Because of the temperature, it is practically impossible to grow any crops here, which is one of the major drawbacks for the inhabitants. The people are forced to use food such as frozen fish meat, reindeer meat and the local delicacy – ice-cubed horse blood with macaroni. Yummy! Another problem for the people of Oymyakon is the plumbing. Because of the harsh weather, the plumbing systems will freeze, so the locals have outhouses. Good old outhouses in the freezing weather. As for their cars, people keep them inside heated garages, or simply leave them running outside. Oymyakon is 576 miles away from the nearest major city of Yakutsk, and it will take you a couple of days to get there, so be prepared. But the place has a great reputation, with interesting people, indoor fun and games and an “exotic” cuisine, to say the least. How they manage to keep sane in that weather, though – is beyond me. 9. Easter Island, Chile This is one of the most isolated islands in the world with a population of around 6,500 people. It is 2,500 miles east of Tahiti and the nearest continental point is in Chile, some 2,300 miles away. In 1888, Chile annexed Easter Island, and from then on it’s been considered a part of Insular Chile. As you probably know, Easter Island is most famous for its almost 900 giant stone heads, known as Moai by the Rapa Nui people who carved the figures. These monoliths are from between 1,100 and 1,500 AD and have actual hidden bodies underneath the ground. Their creators were master craftsmen and engineers and there is still much speculation and mystery surrounding their purpose. Easter Island is a volcanic hot spot, similar to Hawaii, but the only regular flights are via LAN airlines from Santiago de Chile. It’s quite out of the way for almost everyone and it is pretty much only convenient if you are doing a trip around the world. 8. Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland This small settlement in Greenland is one of the remotest settlements on Earth. It was founded in 1925, and it’s the farthest of all inhabited areas on Greenland. The only way to get to it is by helicopter or boat! This place, practically at the edge of the world, has a population of just 450 people, but there have been a lot of tourists in recent years. This place is actually very close to the biggest multi-branched fjord system in the world, and a national park so the surrounding scenery is nothing short of amazing. It’s frozen 9 months out of the year and the only way this town can survive is through fishing and hunting. If you want to visit Ittoqqortoormiit as a tourist, it’s totally possible; it has one bright orange guesthouse in town, a pub that opens one night a week, a general store, and a post office. Travel companies can arrange all manner of adventurous excursions, from dog sledding and kayaking to hiking and hunting. Just be ready for chilly weather! 7. La Rinconada, Peru This is a small mining town located high up in the Peruvian Andes. It is officially the world’s highest city, at 5,130 m above sea level. La Rinconada lies on a glacier that’s permanently frozen, and the only way to reach it is by truck via winding roads up the mountain. There is no airport anywhere close by. Not many people can handle the trip to La Rinconada, let alone live there. To reach the city takes days and then you have to deal with the altitude sickness, which is an ordeal in itself. Nevertheless, this place has a population of 30,000 people. Why? Because word got out that there was gold in the area so prospectors moved to the remote location by the thousands. Most of them are involved in the gold mining business. Allegedly, the working conditions in La Rinconada are deplorable, which only add to the misery of this place. It operates under a system where miners work throughout the month for no pay. After their 30 days, they can leave the mine hauling as much ore as they can carry on their person. The catch is there is no way of telling if there is any gold in the ore at all. Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

See more from David Rovics at his own channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNvnHiMQWkL8E6382mrRx-g Lyrics: I pulled the stones for the emperor, Stacked 'em up and made that wall I thought, a mountain lasts forever But the rain must always fall I worked the mines in Chile For conquistador Died there in the pitshaft, Joined my family with the ore I tapped the trees for Leopold, And then he took my hands The sap sailed to Brussels And my blood stained the lands I cut down the sugar cane On the islands off the coast Oh but the sweet taste of freedom Is the stuff I love the most Tell me who am I Do you know my name Will I lie forgotten Or arise in glory and fame I fought with Poncho Villa, Stood with him side by side When the Bluecoats took the land, I thought how long is freedom's ride I was there at Haymarket With the martyrs eight For striking in Chicago, Death would have to be my fate I cut the timber in Centralia, Nearly broke my back Tried to organize a union And they tied me to the tracks I fought in Barcelona, Kept the fascists there at bay Then when Hitler's tanks came rolling in, I knew we couldn't stay Tell me who am I Do you know my name Will I lie forgotten Or arise in glory and fame I mined the ore in Arizona, Last of the Navajo Got the radium a-glowin' Then it was time for me to go I marched in South Africa, Found myself in Sharpeville Once the police came and went I was lying oh so still I campaigned for Allende For a nation without fear Didn't look behind me For the day I'd disappear I spoke at Tienanmen To revive the revolution Didn't think for Deng Xiaoping, Rolling tanks were his solution Tell me who am I Do you know my name Will I lie forgotten Or arise in glory and fame I grew the mangoes in Somalia For the people in the west And when the price for fruit went down, I went down starving with the rest I worked the plant in Bangkok, Breathed the dusty air When the cotton started burning, I knew my life would not be spared The cops beat me in Los Angeles But I would not be scared When they sent the Army in, I thought next time we'll be prepared Yes I've been yearning for a new day, All the world wide Someday my time will come And you will have to step aside Tell me who am I Do you know my name Will I lie forgotten Or arise in glory and fame

ALIEN Places on Earth

07:23
From environments most comparable to those found on other planets to the mysterious Devil’s Tower here’s some places that, while they may be on earth, look like they belong in a different world entirely. Subscribe to Knowledge Feed for awesome mysteries, discoveries, fun topics and all around AWESOME videos ! 10. Atacama Desert The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the driest, most inhospitable places on Earth, an environment which NASA researchers are absolutely thrilled with. For people who need to approximate the conditions of Mars, the Atacama Desert is the perfect place. Rovers are regularly driven through patches of the desert so that builders can see how they hold up in preparation for alien environments. 9. Spotted Lake in Canada Summer months in many parts of Canada are beautiful, but at the Spotted Lake in British Columbia, they reveal a brighter, more colorful world. The lake is full of various mineral deposits that are revealed when most of it's water evaporates in the heat. The site has bee n revered (re veered) for hundreds of years as having therapeutic and medically beneficial waters. 8. Red Beach It's hard to accept when you first see pictures, but these images exist in real life and haven’t been altered in any way. Located in China amongst the biggest wetland and reed marsh in the world this visual phenomenon is caused by the sea weed, which turns bright red in the Autumn. Imagine unexpectedly finding yourself on Red Beach, you would think you were on some other world for sure. 7. Valley of Fire On a bright, sunny day, this valley 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas appears to be on fire. That’s thanks to its red sandstone formations which were created from shifting sand dunes 150 million years ago and give the area it's name. It has some out of this world formations like Elephant Rock, Winstone Arch and Fire Wave. It’s also full of petroglyphs left by ancient pueblo peoples thousands of years ago. 6. Waitomo Glowworm Caves Found on the North Island in New Zealand, a place that was used as the backdrop for Middle Earth in the Lord of the Rings, these caves are most notable for it's species of glowworms that are unique to the caves that they light up. The local Maori people had known of the caves for centuries before showing an English surveyor in the 1880’s. 5. Great Blue Hole Like the Eye of the Sahara you can only truly appreciate the Great Blue Hole which is 43 miles from Belize City from a bird's eye view. The giant submarine sinkhole is almost one thousand feet across and plunges around 350 feet deep. Scuba divers can appreciate it's depths and the spot has become a popular place for scuba diving. 4. Door to Hell The Soviets tried to set up a drilling platform in Turkmenistan in 1971 and the Door to Hell is what happened. The rig collapsed and panicked researchers set the resulting crater on fire hoping to curtail the spread of poisonous methane gas. They assumed the fire would burn out in a timely fashion. Today, nearly a half century later the fire continues to burn, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors and making for one of many odd leftovers from the Soviet Union. 3. Devil’s Tower Every year around four hundred thousand people visit Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. Of those one percent, or around four thousand traverse the Tower, which has to make for an awesome view when they reach the summit. How exactly the tower formed is still a mystery. Geologists agree that it was created by an igneous intrusion, but how it took place is unknown. Some experts feel that it's all that remains of what was once a huge volcano but there is certainly no consensus on this theory. 2. Rio Tinto River Winding it's way through southwestern Spain the Rio Tinto River has a lot of iron in it, making it extremely acidic with a pH of 2 and giving it it's crazy, hard to believe reddish hue. People living in the region have mined the area for thousands of years for copper, gold, silver and other minerals. This has likely led to the acidic nature of the Rio Tinto. The presence of life in the Rio Tinto points to the likelihood of life in other areas of our solar system that have similar conditions. Thanks so much for watching and we’ll see you guys soon. Hey don’t forget to leave some feedback in the comments section and oh ya check out number one, it’ll blow your socks off, if of course you’re wearing socks. 1. Cave of the Crystals The giant gypsum crystals you see here are a part of the Cave of the Crystals. The cave’s main chamber contains some of the largest natural crystals you can find on this planet. It’s extremely hot with humidity comparable to a bad day in Florida. These factors mean that people can only endure ten minutes of exposure at a time without proper protection. It also leaves the cave relatively unexplored so who knows what could be lurking in its mysterious depths.

knox mine disaster location and footage

05:32
Please like & subscribe to JP Videos This video shows the location of the knox mine disaster and shows how it looks today as well as footage from 1959. enjoy Don't forget to like my page https://www.facebook.com/JPVideos81 At approximately 11:20 a.m., two laborers in the Pittston vein heard a sharp “popping” sound. They quickly called upon John Williams, the assistant foreman. The three employees hurried to escape and notify superintendent Robert Groves, who immediately ordered an evacuation, although he withheld the severity of the situation. Unfortunately, the other three men who were stationed in this vein could not escape in time and the fierce waters of the Susquehanna took their lives. While millions of gallons of water flooded into the mine, thirty-three men managed to catch the last elevators at the May shaft, but forty-five others remained trapped, desperately seeking their own outlet. During the first sixty four hours of the emergency, an estimated 2.7 million gallons of water per minute streamed underground from an enormous whirlpool near the riverbank. Down below, thirty-two men wandered in two separate groups until they managed to escape through the abandoned Eagle air shaft. Pennsylvania Coal Company surveyor, Joe Stella, led the first group of seven. He not only knew the mines well, but also possessed maps which allowed his group to find a direct course to the opening. The second group, led by Myron Thomas, consisted of twenty-five men who wandered for hours before they found their way to safety. Unfortunately, twelve of the original remaining bodies have never been recovered. Thousands of bails of hay and hundreds of railroad ties were also added. Culm, dirt, and rock along with over 50 coal and railroad cars barely stopped the river. Finally they diverted the river around Wintermoot Island by building dams at both ends of the island. Once they pumped the water out between the dams the size of the hole was evident. Tons of clay and rock were poured into the hole and a concrete cap was placed on top of the opening. They then pumped much of the water out of the mine to look for the 12 missing miners. How could this tragedy have happened? The original plan was to keep 50 feet of rock and coal between the workings and the river bottom. The Knox company wanted this to be lowered to 35 feet. Mine inspectors deemed this ok as it would be sufficient to stand up to the river. At this point the seam of coal sloped up towards the river in what is known as an anticline. Company owners kept pushing the miners closer and closer to the river bottom until the rock could no longer support the river. At the point where the river broke through the rock was only 5 to 6 feet thick! This disaster ended deep mining in the Wyoming valley as almost all of the coal company’s mines connected.

FAIR USE this is like chili con carne (chili pepper with meat) - too hot for most. the demons (trolls) in your mind will not enjoy this truth. statements based on assumptions are slanderous. that is the way of Jezebel. let her and her minions gossip publicly... forgive them. assuming is judging with no evidence. a true witness weighs ALL of the evidence and does not jump to conclusions based on looks alone or based from one tiny point of perspective. a true witness speaks truth - fake is fake and that is the truth. self-worth is self-pride. deny the self as Jesus Christ of Nazareth commands. a fake god is as obvious as fake eyelashes... do not let the Jezebels get under your skin like the collagen did their lips. all they know is sin, and they assume it is righteous. they be self-righteous, self-willed. they be wise in their own eyes. forgive them. they will project their demons on you... use your shield of faith and sword of the Lord. Let God fight for you and hold your peace. forgive them - they know not what they do. they are the dumb masses. Jezebel will say in her arrogance that God needs us... no He does not NEED us. be aware of every word spoken by the harlot that will speak that lie. WE need God, and that is the truth. do not let the old bat's fake eyelashes make a fool of you. Proverbs 3:7 ¶ Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do [his commandments]: his praise endureth for ever. Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge: [but] fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 15:33 The fear of the LORD [is] the instruction of wisdom; and before honour [is] humility. Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; Isaiah 33:6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, [and] strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD [is] his treasure. Psalm 119:43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments. Luke 9:23 ¶ And he said to [them] all, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. Luke 14:26 If any [man] come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. 1 Corinthians 6:13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body [is] not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body. 1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. 1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. Google maps exploration West Virginia Appalachian region USA. West Virginia pictures & photo spheres

05:20
West Virginia is a state located in the Appalachian region of the Southern United States. It is bordered by Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Ohio to the northwest, Pennsylvania to the north (and, slightly, east), and Maryland to the northeast. West Virginia is the 41st largest by area and the 38th most populous of the 50 United States. The capital and largest city is Charleston. West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions of 1861, in which delegates from some Unionist counties of northwestern Virginia decided to break away from Virginia during the American Civil War, although they included many secessionist counties in the new state. West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key Civil War border state. West Virginia was the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state, the first to separate from any state since Maine separated from Massachusetts, and was one of two states formed during the American Civil War (the other being Nevada, which separated from Utah Territory). The Census Bureau and the Association of American Geographers classify West Virginia as part of the Southern United States. The northern panhandle extends adjacent to Pennsylvania and Ohio, with the West Virginia cities of Wheeling and Weirton just across the border from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, while Bluefield is less than 70 miles (110 km) from North Carolina. Huntington in the southwest is close to the states of Ohio and Kentucky, while Martinsburg and Harpers Ferry in the Eastern Panhandle region are considered part of the Washington metropolitan area, in between the states of Maryland and Virginia. The unique position of West Virginia means that it is often included in several geographical regions, including the Mid-Atlantic, the Upland South, and the Southeastern United States. It is the only state that is entirely within the area served by the Appalachian Regional Commission; the area is commonly defined as "Appalachia". The state is noted for its mountains and rolling hills, its historically significant logging and coal mining industries, and its political and labor history. It is one of the most densely karstic areas in the world, making it a choice area for recreational caving and scientific research.[not verified in body] The karst lands contribute to much of the state's cool trout waters. It is also known for a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, and hunting. Erasure - February 2018 UK Tour Trailer

00:26
Buy tickets here - https://myticket.co.uk/artists/erasure It’s hard to think of another songwriting partnership as golden as that of Erasure. For 32 years, without a break or break-up, Andy Bell and Vince Clarke have mined a rich seam of creativity that has led to chart-conquering singles, a string of immaculate albums, a BRIT, an Ivor Novello Award and now World Be Gone, their seventeenth studio album. Produced by the band themselves and recorded shortly after their 30th-anniversary celebrations – during which they scored yet another UK Top 10 with their hits package Always – it sees the duo enter their fourth decade with renewed creative charge. Instead of the heady, euphoric dance music of their 2014 album The Violet Flame, on World Be Gone the mood is thoughtful, reflective and reminiscent of 1995’s lush, experimental album Erasure.

U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement - OSMRE

Since its creation under the federal Surface Coal Mining and Reclamation Act of 1977 (August 3), the agency has been known as Office of Surface Mining or just OSM. It has a very storied history - http://groups.google.com/group/bob-mooney/web/osmre-timeline Joe Pizarchark has been the OSM Director since November 6, 2009, having now outlasted many of its 17 previous directors -- and being only the 10th director to actually be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSxyjLcXpjU Director Pizarchik has undertaken a Stream Saver Protection initative that will require years to promulgate and more years to fight legal battles to achieve implementation which will also take many years to get amended into the state regulatory programs, (In 2010, some changes made after 1983 have yet to be amended into the state programs.) http://www.osmre.gov/topic/StreamProtection/StreamProtectionOverview.shtm Efforts to conduct oversight more effectively on state, tribal and fedeal regulatory programs began in June 2009 and proposed improvements are pending. http://www.osmre.gov/topic/Oversight/SCM/SCM.shtm OSM now focuses on awards to reclamation awards to coal companies and to State Abandonend Mine Land Programs - http://www.osmre.gov/topic/awards/Awards.shtm - more so than on providing required annual reports to Congress - http://www.osmre.gov/Reports/AnnualReport/AnnualReport.shtm - and doing timely evaluation reports on state and federal regulatory programs - http://www.osmre.gov/Reports/EvalInfo/EvalInfo.shtm OSM has recently undertaken efforts to identify unresolved issues, like the Ohio State regulatory program that remains only conditionally approved since August 1982 and continual sillage of coal waste slurry like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8rdo6LNtmE OSM has not had a staff directory for years. Recently its three regions created staff lists - http://www.arcc.osmre.gov/ http://www.mcrcc.osmre.gov/ http://www.wrcc.osmre.gov/ An agency-wide staff directory is now under development.. Currently, There are about 500 OSM employees compared to nearly 1200 in 1980. PoLAR Partnership - Columbia Climate Center

09:38
The PoLAR Partnership is a project of the CCC supported by grants from the National Science Foundation for a term of seven years. Through the NSF Phase I CCEP award, the CCC organized and coordinated the PoLAR Partnership, which met with stakeholders and analyzed educational strategies to transform public understanding of climate change. With the NSF Phase II CCEP award, we plan to implement our vision to use novel educational approaches and fascination with the changing polar regions in order to engage adult learners and inform public understanding and response to climate change. The PoLAR Partnership is developing a suite of interactive and game-like tools that capitalize on the iconic imagery of the Arctic and Antarctic, areas which are often considered the ‘canaries in the coal mine’ of a changing global climate. Games and game-like activities are increasingly used to engage diverse participants in problem solving. Focusing on the poles also leads to discussion of broader impacts, especially as the changes taking place in the polar regions are increasingly linked to concerns about rising sea levels and extreme weather around the globe. Adult learners, be they community leaders, the general public, pre- and in-service teachers, or college students, are today’s decision makers and are more likely to make informed decisions if they understand the scientific evidence of climate change and its social, economic, and environmental consequences. Announcement 2015: The PoLAR Partnership launched The PoLAR Hub (thepolarhub.org), featuring the latest in polar climate science, news, and research. The PoLAR Hub provides information on educational resources focused on polar climate change including games, activities, and other novel tools developed by the PoLAR Partnership.

Garbage

Pete Seeger Performing "Garbage" "Mister Thompson calls the waiter, orders steak and baked potater he leaves the bone and gristle and he never eats the skin The busboy comes and takes it, with a cough contaminates it puts it in a can with coffee grounds and sardine tins and the truck comes by on Friday and carts it all away; a thousand trucks just like it are converging on the Bay, oh, Garbage (garbage, garbage, garbage) Garbage! We're filling up the sea with garbage (garbage...) What will we do when there's no place left To put all the garbage? (garbage...) Mr. Thompson starts his Cadillac, winds it down the freeway track Leaving friends and neighbors in a hydro-carbon haze; He's joined by lots of smaller cars all sending gases to the stars. There they form a seething cloud that hangs for thirty days. And the sun licks down into it with an ultraviolet tongue. turns it into smog then it settles in our lungs, oh, Garbage (garbage...) Garbage! We're filling up the sky with garbage (garbage...) What will we do When there's nothing left to breathe but garbage (garbage...) Getting home and taking off his shoes he settles with the evening news, While the kids do homework with the TV in one ear While Superman for the thousandth time sells talking dolls and conquers crime Dutifully they learn the date of birth of Paul Revere. In the paper there's a piece about the mayor's middle name, he gets it read in time to watch the all-star bingo game, oh, Garbage (garbage...) We're filling up our minds with garbage Garbage (garbage...) What will we do when there's nothing left to read And there's nothing left to need And there's nothing left to watch And there's nothing left to touch And there's nothing left to walk upon nothing left to talk upon Nothing left to see And nothing left to be but Garbage (garbage...) In Mister Thompson's factory, they're making plastic Christmas trees Complete with silver tinsel and a geodesic stand The plastic's mixed in giant vats from some conglomeration That's been piped from deep within the earth or strip-mined from the land. And if you question anything, they say, "Why, don't you see? It's absolutely needed for the economy," oh, Oh, Garbage! Garbage! Garbage! Garbage! There stocks and their bonds -- all garbage! Garbage! Garbage! Garbage! Garbage! What will they do when their system goes to smash There's no value to their cash There's no money to be made But there's a world to be repaid Their kids will read in history books About financiers and other crooks And feudalism, and slavery And nukes and all their knavery To history's dustbin they're consigned Along with many other kinds of garbage. Garbage! Garbage! Garbage! Garbage!"

TERRAMOL

01:47
Terramol can be effectively used as soil improvement agent for sporting grounds, golf courses, lawns, parks as well as indoor and outdoor plant cultures. Terramol is also advantageously used in hydroponics, e.g. bonsai trees and orchids. Terramol based on the unique moler, an amorphous silicate and a harmless natural product that is only found and mined on the islands of Fur, Mors and Nordsalling in Denmark. Moler is comprised of approximately 1/3 clay and approx. 2/3 diatoms. Terramol is burned at high temperatures and it is therefore a sterile product. Terramol, which has a pH value of 5.5 gives the soil a loose structure and allows the air to penetrate down to the roots. Terramol extends the wilting point through absorption and encapsulation of water and nutrients that are released as needed.

Bolivia, miners and the man-eating mountains in Potosi

42:31
Bolivia is known for their miners and mining industry that flourished at the Cerro Potosì, also known as Cerro Rico or the "rich mountain". Bolivia´s capital city Potosì is one of the highest in the world and home of many miners and their family. What keeps miners doing their dangerous work? Dutch presenter and film maker Stef Biemans travels across the back of the Andes and wonders how people are doing in South America. In the first episode of this documentary series across the back of the Andes he experiences how life is celebrated in a place where for a majority of people it ends early. In Potosí a miner normally does not get older than 45 years. South America is changing. Some people call this continent an investment paradise, others say that it is still really chaotic. In the miners' city of Potosí capitalism was born. Here the first coin was minted with silver from the mine of the 'rich mountain', which is still in use. There is so much silver from this impressive mountain that you could build a bridge to Spain with it. But you could also build a bridge of the bones of deceased miners and slaves. What is left of the wealth that the ´rich mountain` has brought to the people? Presenter Biemans visits together with other miners a mine and experience the life of the workers. Mines are men territory, women are not seen here, therefore the concept of Machismo is totally normal here. Most of the men have big families with seven children. And while they are working long hours in the mine, their wives are at home looking after the children. To survive the hard-working days miners chew coca leaves, that provides them with enough energy. A miner normally gets not older than 45 years. A sad reality, that keeps not away new workers to go down the mines, as they are the one who drive the economy and are celebrated every year. Are you going to live in a different way, when you know, that your life is short? How do people live with the sad reality, that their work will probably kill them? Stef Biemans experiences daily life in Potosì and tries to understand the miners and their will to go on with a dangerous work that mostly costs their life. Exoplanets: The Quest for Strange New Worlds (live public talk)

01:25:25
Original air date: January 12 at 7 p.m. PT (10 p.m. ET, 0300 UTC) Planets orbiting other stars, or exoplanets, have become an important field of astronomical study over the past two and a half decades. Recent findings from NASA's Kepler mission suggest that nearly every star you see in the night sky probably has exoplanets orbiting it. The number of confirmed exoplanets is now a few thousand. This talk will present a brief history of exoplanet discoveries, the story of the “super-Saturn” extrasolar ring system, and summarize NASA’s ongoing future plans to discover and characterize “strange new worlds.” Speaker: Eric Mamajek, Deputy Program Chief Scientist, NASA Exoplanet Exploration Program, JPL

Lift! - O God You Planted A Garden

03:35
Music and words © 2012 Andrew Donaldson, Canada O God, you planted a garden, A garden eastward in Eden. You formed us there, you named us there; There we went our own way. Eager to taste of evil and good, We plucked, we ate, we hid, we blamed; But now, confessing, seek your face. Lead us in your way of justice, O God. Lead us in your way of peace! O God, you planted a garden, A garden eastward in Eden. You taught us there, walked with us there; There we went our own way. Eager to learn the ways of wealth, We mined, we drilled, we squandered, spilled; Now oceans drown in our excess. Lead us in your way of justice, O God. Lead us in your way of peace! O God, you planted a garden A garden eastward in Eden. You blessed us there, amazed us there; There we went our own way. Eager to grasp the ways of power, We built, we paved, we fenced, enslaved; Now all earth cries out for release. Lead us in your way of justice, O God. Lead us in your way of peace!
