London Locks & Dam, WV
08.13.09 - Located in London, WV near Montgovery on the Kanawha River. These locks provide a maximum lift of 24 ft from lower to upper pool. They also provide a navigable channel on the river and principally serves the coal mines barges in that area. I have never seen a lock of this magnitude in my life. I was amazed and fascinated by it! Unfortunately, it was still a dark and dreary morning at the time. At the end of the videos, there's three pics. Notice the guy on the ramp in the lower right corner of the first pic after last video.

Brooke's Global Ambassador Charlotte Dujardin witnesses "dancing horses" of India
Donate here to help protect and improve the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules: https://www.thebrooke.org/get-involved/donate Last year our Global Ambassador Charlotte Dujdarin, Brooke CEO Petra Ingram and Alice Oppenheimer and visited India to see the needs of the working horses, donkeys and mules we help. The Dewa Fair is held in Lucknow every year and is a place for animal owners to come from all over India to buy and sell their animals, or just to associate with other owners. Some even travel from far away because they know the Brooke will be there and they want a vet to take a look at their horse or donkey. The Qualandar community is famous for breeding and training animals, traditionally they are artists and entertainers, specialising in magic shows and training their animals to do tricks. While Charlotte was walking around the fair she witnessed a man performing with his “dancing horse” and was very distressed to see the training techniques he used to make the horse dance. Brooke staff halted the performance and with Charlotte had a conversation with the man about why his technique was causing pain to the animal, and how he could work with it differently using a more humane training method. India Suffers Massive Power Outages, Leaving 600 Million in the Dark
A second day of blackouts has crippled India, depriving 600 million people of electricity and leaving half of the country in the dark. The first outage was localized to northern India, and affected around 350 million people, but the second spread to eastern and northeastern regions, including the capital of New Delhi. At least 300 trains have been held up, and other important infrastructure has been impacted, leaving giant traffic jams and even coal miners stranded underground. While power cuts are relatively common in the country, increased power demand has become more common lately. Farmers are using more irrigation in part because monsoon rains have been delayed, and people are increasing their use of air conditioning units. Observers have called on India, the third largest Asian economy, to update its infrastructure to meet growing power needs. After the latest blackouts, those calls will no doubt grow in volume and number.

Meet Crossrail's giant tunnelling machines
Crossrail will use eight tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to construct the new tunnels under London. These huge machines will work 24 hours a day beneath the streets of London, excavating large volumes of ground and erecting the concrete tunnel lining. Each machine has a rotating cutter head at the front, and a series of trailers behind, housing all the mechanical and electrical equipment required for the excavation of material. To construct the 42km of tunnel required for Crossrail the tunnel boring machines will undertake ten individual tunnel drives to construct the 6.2m diameter rail tunnels. Each TBM weighs approximately 1000 tonnes and will be up to 140m in length with an external diameter of 7.1m. This allows for an inside tunnel diameter of 6.2m once the concrete tunnel segments are in place. Each TBM will be operated by a 'tunnel gang' comprising of around twenty people - twelve people on the TBM itself and eight people working from the rear of the machine to above ground. To find out more about our tunnel boring machines visit: http://www.crossrail.co.uk/tunnelling/ http://www.crossrail.co.uk/

Football and Olympics spark riots in Brazil
Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Brazilian cities to protest against the growing public transport fees amid generous spending on the organization of the FIFA World Cup in 2014. The protests have become the largest in Brazil in more than 20 years. In Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, demonstrations turned into clashes with police. At least 30 people, 20 of them policemen have been injured during the riots. To disperse the demonstrators in Sao Paulo, local authorities had to use armored vehicles, helicopters, cavalry and special forces. Protesters claim that they are highly concerned about high prices on transport. Brazil will soon host the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, and people complain that huge amounts of money are being wasted instead of being spent on health care or education. The protests have already embraced eleven Brazilian cities.

N. Korea's economy grows 3.9% in 2016 on-year, fastest pace in 17 years
대북 제재에도 지난해 북한 경제성장률 3.9%로 17년만에 최고 Shifting our focus to the North's economy now. Surprisingly it grew the largest in close to 2 decades... seemingly unfazed by growing international sanctions designed to hurt its wallets. The coal industry in particular, expanded significantly Connie Kim looks beyond the numbers. Amid extensive and comprehensive sanctions from both individual countries and the international community, North Korea's economy expanded nearly four-percent in 2016 compared to the previous year, the fastest rate in 17 years. The South Korean central bank said Friday that North Korea's GDP has grown three-point-percent in 2016 on-year on the back of drought recovery and the low base effect. Delving deeper into sectors,… the North's electricity, gas and water supply industry grew the most by some 22-percent followed by the mining and heavy and chemical industries. The central bank has not given an official answer to why the North Korean economy expanded in the face of strong international sanctions. But most North Korea watchers in Seoul point to the increase of markets that are giving more individuals the chance to find business opportunities under Kim Jong-un's reign. On the back of Pyongyang's economic growth is also the increase of its total trade volume. A report from South Korea's Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, or KOTRA, shows the figure recorded six-and-a-half billion U.S. dollars in 2016, a jump of four-point-seven-percent on-year. Exports of coal and iron have driven up the figures, along with an increase of imports of clothing and automobiles. While coal exports were the main target in the latest UN resolution 2321, KOTRA says putting an exception on such exports solely intended to safeguard the North Korean people's livelihoods left a loophole in the sanctions effect. China, North Korea's traditional ally, has taken up a staggering 93-percent of total trade with the regime followed by Russia at a mere one-point-two percent. Connie Kim, Arirang News. This is what much of the Niger Delta looks like after what environmentalists say is "the equivalent of one Exxon Valdez every year". While it is revealed by secret correspondence released by Wikileaks that one minister can siphon off $20 million dollars in bribes from oil companies, local communities are reduced to eating fish meat that tastes of kerosene. This inequality has led to the rise in cases of sabotage of pipelines to get access to crude oil. It is this that the oil companies blame now for the level of pollution. But for ecologists there are no doubts that poor maintenance is far more to blame than the low level sabotage for the fact that the Delta has more than one leak every day. They say the companies consider it cheaper to lose the oil than maintain and protect the pipes. And as the world turns a blind eye, the desperation of the locals intensifies. "There's a vast contrast between what we saw in America, when President Barack Obama was on the side of the people during the Gulf of Mexico spill, and here."
