Hackney didn't need a coal mine to start a colliery band

01:55
They've been everywhere from the Olympics to Nijmegen: London Live caught up with the Hackney Colliery Band. Blending afro-beat, hip hop and Balkan brass with East End jazz, the Hackney Colliery Band is one of the more unusual acts performing in London today. The nine-piece are making waves around the world, having played a 45 minute set at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. Their name, a reference to brass groups from coal-mining towns, takes a little explaining. “It’s partly a homage to British brass traditions and also partly to imagine what it would be like if there was a traditional brass band in Hackney, how would it represent the diversity of music that goes on there”, said band leader Steve Peters. Having played dates in Berlin, Brussels and Nijmegen earlier this year, they returned to the capital for a performance at the Jazz Café in Camden this week. “The live scene in London is so exciting and there’s so much going on here, whether it’s in an experimental music night in a café in Dalston or huge pop acts at the O2”, Steve said. “It feels incredibly vibrant and really important to our sound”. The Hackney Colliery Band are currently recording some new music and are booking their festival slots for 2015.

Brooke's Global Ambassador Charlotte Dujardin witnesses "dancing horses" of India

01:36
Donate here to help protect and improve the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules: https://www.thebrooke.org/get-involved/donate Last year our Global Ambassador Charlotte Dujdarin, Brooke CEO Petra Ingram and Alice Oppenheimer and visited India to see the needs of the working horses, donkeys and mules we help. The Dewa Fair is held in Lucknow every year and is a place for animal owners to come from all over India to buy and sell their animals, or just to associate with other owners. Some even travel from far away because they know the Brooke will be there and they want a vet to take a look at their horse or donkey. The Qualandar community is famous for breeding and training animals, traditionally they are artists and entertainers, specialising in magic shows and training their animals to do tricks. While Charlotte was walking around the fair she witnessed a man performing with his “dancing horse” and was very distressed to see the training techniques he used to make the horse dance. Brooke staff halted the performance and with Charlotte had a conversation with the man about why his technique was causing pain to the animal, and how he could work with it differently using a more humane training method. Football and Olympics spark riots in Brazil

00:52
Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Brazilian cities to protest against the growing public transport fees amid generous spending on the organization of the FIFA World Cup in 2014. The protests have become the largest in Brazil in more than 20 years. In Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, demonstrations turned into clashes with police. At least 30 people, 20 of them policemen have been injured during the riots. To disperse the demonstrators in Sao Paulo, local authorities had to use armored vehicles, helicopters, cavalry and special forces. Protesters claim that they are highly concerned about high prices on transport. Brazil will soon host the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, and people complain that huge amounts of money are being wasted instead of being spent on health care or education. The protests have already embraced eleven Brazilian cities.

Niger's Appalling Daily Oil Leak Issue (2012)

Endless Oil Spills (2012): It is one of the largest ecological disasters in the world. This is what much of the Niger Delta looks like after what environmentalists say is "the equivalent of one Exxon Valdez every year". While it is revealed by secret correspondence released by Wikileaks that one minister can siphon off $20 million dollars in bribes from oil companies, local communities are reduced to eating fish meat that tastes of kerosene. This inequality has led to the rise in cases of sabotage of pipelines to get access to crude oil. It is this that the oil companies blame now for the level of pollution. But for ecologists there are no doubts that poor maintenance is far more to blame than the low level sabotage for the fact that the Delta has more than one leak every day. They say the companies consider it cheaper to lose the oil than maintain and protect the pipes. And as the world turns a blind eye, the desperation of the locals intensifies. India Suffers Massive Power Outages, Leaving 600 Million in the Dark

00:54
A second day of blackouts has crippled India, depriving 600 million people of electricity and leaving half of the country in the dark. The first outage was localized to northern India, and affected around 350 million people, but the second spread to eastern and northeastern regions, including the capital of New Delhi. At least 300 trains have been held up, and other important infrastructure has been impacted, leaving giant traffic jams and even coal miners stranded underground. While power cuts are relatively common in the country, increased power demand has become more common lately. Farmers are using more irrigation in part because monsoon rains have been delayed, and people are increasing their use of air conditioning units. Observers have called on India, the third largest Asian economy, to update its infrastructure to meet growing power needs. After the latest blackouts, those calls will no doubt grow in volume and number.

Meet Crossrail's giant tunnelling machines

06:34
Crossrail will use eight tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to construct the new tunnels under London. These huge machines will work 24 hours a day beneath the streets of London, excavating large volumes of ground and erecting the concrete tunnel lining. Each machine has a rotating cutter head at the front, and a series of trailers behind, housing all the mechanical and electrical equipment required for the excavation of material. To construct the 42km of tunnel required for Crossrail the tunnel boring machines will undertake ten individual tunnel drives to construct the 6.2m diameter rail tunnels. Each TBM weighs approximately 1000 tonnes and will be up to 140m in length with an external diameter of 7.1m. This allows for an inside tunnel diameter of 6.2m once the concrete tunnel segments are in place. Each TBM will be operated by a 'tunnel gang' comprising of around twenty people - twelve people on the TBM itself and eight people working from the rear of the machine to above ground. To find out more about our tunnel boring machines visit: http://www.crossrail.co.uk/tunnelling/ http://www.crossrail.co.uk/

02:02
Visit: http://noolympics.blogspot.com for reasons for boycotting Beijing Olympics 2008 The Chinese National Anthem reminds us how the extreme poverty exists in China under the Chinese communsit regime. According to World Bank's figures, 46.7% of the population in China live under $2/day which is higher than that in Sri Lanka! The Chinese National Anthem also reminds us of the great number of miners who die every year because of mine explosions and other hazards. Under the Chinese communist regime, the death toll of miners has reached 70,000 to 100,000 a year in China in 2005. Alabama Highlands 1937 US National Park Service

10:34
more at http://quickfound.net/ "A closer look at the Civilian Conservation Corps' work in Alabama from the Department of Interior. This film shows Birmingham and views of Alabama's mountains, homes, factories, mines, railways, and its State Parks, including Oak Mountain State Park, Weogufka State Park, De Soto State Park, and Cheaha State Park. Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) men in the parks crack rocks, construct lodges and roads, operate bulldozers and dump trucks, and study first aid and artificial respiration. It includes views of tourists driving into the parks, picnicking, and wading in streams." Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). transcript: http://www.archives.gov/social-media/transcripts/transcript-alabama-highlands-1937-11699.pdf Narrator: Birmingham -- metropolis of Alabama, population more than a quarter million -- is called the Industrial City Beautiful. Approached from the south, it bursts upon the traveler in surprising glory nestled among lofty mountains. Rose vines line the highways; fine homes dot the landscape. One unusual residence is fashioned after the Temple of Vesta, in Rome, and is called Vestavia. Within comparatively recent years, these Alabama highlands, rugged mountains in the northeastern part of the state, have brought about an economic revolution. Alabama was once almost entirely agricultural, and her ancient carte nomen -- The Cotton State -- still prevails. But heavy deposits of coal, iron ore, and associated minerals in the so-called Birmingham District have changed the picture... For thousands in this progressive city, where congestion in living and traffic conditions is increasing, the need of state parks is urgent. The city has enrolled hundreds of Civilian Conservation Corps workers in the task of developing the Alabama state park system. The camp nearest Birmingham is at Bessemer, a suburb, and boys quartered there are developing Oak Mountain State Park. Less than an hour's drive from the inevitable smoke and dust of this Pittsburgh of the South, delightful scenic vistas can be seen from atop this peak in the southern Appalachians... Mountains are precious around this observation tower in Weogufka State Park on the southern tip of the Appalachian range. And because the park lies midway between Birmingham and Montgomery... park structures include overnight cabins. Fort Payne, the town nearest DeSoto State Park, has an interesting place in Indian history. Here the Cherokees were assembled to begin their journey to the western reservation, which most of them accepted in lieu of their lands in the Southeast. Sequoia, the Cherokee scholar accredited with having invented the Cherokee alphabet, lived near the town... Above the state park property, the DeSoto River plunges over rocky ledges in waterfalls of majestic beauty. In caves gouged in the cliffs, early Indian inhabitants lived. In nearby mountain fastnesses, life is still primitive. Another of those difficult mountain road construction jobs has been a major project for the Conservation Corps here. In addition, the Corps has built various park structures -- a lodge, overnight cabins, picnic shelters, et cetera -- using native stone quarried in the area. DeSoto is already attracting hosts of visitors. It's on the main highway between Birmingham, Alabama and Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the people of Tennessee take a neighborly interest in its development. West and slightly north of Birmingham in this Alabama high country are Anniston and Gadsden... Cheaha State Park. Natives still recite an interesting legend concerning some sharp trading participated in by Indian Chief Cheaha in the matter of original ownership of this beautiful area. Government surveys have established that this observation tower, erected by Civilian Conservation Corps labor, surmounts the highest elevation in the state: 2,407 feet. In this park is more of the impressive construction work of the Conservation Corps. There's also another of those park roads winding up from the sultry heat of the valley into the clean, fresh air of the mountains. These simple, substantial backwoods roads are one of the Conservation Corps' important contributions to the proper development and protection of the country. A notable structure is a commodious bathhouse on the shore of a lake of fresh, crystal clear water within the confines of the park. The Corps camp at Cheaha is not far from Fort McClellan, an important military post in the Southeast from which the United States Army directs its disciplinary care of thousands of Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees in the area...
