Logistic Regression Using Excel

07:55
Predict who survives the Titanic disaster using Excel. Logistic regression allows us to predict a categorical outcome using categorical and numeric data. For example, we might want to decide which college alumni will agree to make a donation based on their age, gender, graduation date, and prior history of donating. Or we might want to predict whether or not a loan will default based on credit score, purpose of the loan, geographic location, marital status, and income. Logistic regression will allow us to use the information we have to predict the likelihood of the event we're interested in. Linear Regression helps us answer the question, "What value should we expect?" while logistic regression tells us "How likely is it?" Given a set of inputs, a logistic regression equation will return a value between 0 and 1, representing the probability that the event will occur. Based on that probability, we might then choose to either take or not take a particular action. For example, we might decide that if the likelihood that an alumni will donate is below 5%, then we're not going to ask them for a donation. Or if the probability of default on a loan is above 20%, then we might refuse to issue a loan or offer it at a higher interest rate. How we choose the cutoff depends on a cost-benefit analysis. For example, even if there is only a 10% chance of an alumni donating, but the call only takes two minutes and the average donation is 100 dollars, it is probably worthwhile to call.

Trend Analysis with Microsoft Excel 2016

03:21
Script Person 1: Hey buddy, how do you show a trend analysis on a line chart? Person 2: - Hey, it’s actually very simple and you just have to follow 3 easy steps. - First of all, you have to convert all the sales data into the appropriate formats. And then you create a chart and finally add a trendline. Person 1: - Oh really? Can you show me how? Person 2: - Of course! But before I do, which version of excel do you have? Person 1: - It’s 2016. Person 1: - OK, look. This is the data. The first column is the year and the second is the sales figure for that year. Person 2: - Okay, so the first thing we need to do is to convert all of the sales figures into a currency, in this case, dollars. - We can convert any set of numbers into percentages, time, date, or in this case currency by selecting the column and going on the top fo the page under the ‘numbers’ section and change it to currency OR alternately just pressing Ctrl+Shift+$. - Now that we have the currencies, we select all of the columns and rows that we want to display in our graph, by selecting them using the mouse or alternatively, selecting a single cell and pressing the "Ctrl" and "A" keys simultaneously to select all the adjacent cells with their data. - Excel has many charts and graphs options but in order to show a trend line, we need a line chart. - In order to pick line chart, go to the insert menu ribbon and select line chart. - Excel will automatically generate a line chart based on the values selected, however; we are not quite done yet, we need to add the trend line and to make it more coherent. - Now select the line chart generated by excel, and click on the plus sign on the upright corner of the chart. - Check the “trend line” box. - It will prompt you to check where you would like the trend line to be, in this case, you would pick the sales data set as you want to know the trend on the sales data. - Now you see a trend line was added to the chart and in the legend You can keep the legend if you want or remove it by unchecking the legends box in the same menu. - You can even change the design and color of the chart (if you'd like) by clicking on the chart and going over the Design ribbon under “chart tools”. - Finally, you can add a title to your chart and you are done Person 1: - Oh wow, it is great. but how do I include the sales figure for each year on this line chart? Person 2: - You need to click on the chart and click on the plus sign on the upright corner and check the “data table” box. Person 1: - What would I do without you! Thank you so much, man! Person 2: - No worries.

Descriptive Statistics in NCSS

02:55
The Descriptive Statistics procedure in NCSS is used to summarize a column of data both statistically and graphically. The summaries focus on the center, the spread, and the distribution of the data. The dataset for this procedure need only be a single column of values. Additional columns could be used to break up the data into groups, but grouping is optional. In this example, we will use a column of heights. To obtain descriptive statistics of the height column, we open the Descriptive Statistics procedure from the menu. Height is entered as a Data Variable. We will not be using Frequencies or Groups in this case, so those can be left blank. We will leave all the boxes checked on the Reports tab, as well as the Plots tab. The Run button is pressed to generate the output report. The first two sections give a variety of basic summaries of the height data. The Means Section shows various means, the median, and the mode, as well as the corresponding confidence intervals. The Variation Section focuses on the spread of the data. The Skewness and Kurtosis Section shows how the tails of the distribution relate to the Normal distribution. The Trimmed Section gives the mean and standard deviation for the height data after a percentage of the outside values have been removed. These statistics can be useful when there are outliers or other anomalies in the distribution. The Normality Test section gives a variety of tests for determining whether the distribution of the data is significantly different from Normal. There does not appear to be strong evidence of non-Normality for this data. The histogram doesn’t seem to show a very Normal-shaped distribution, but the Normal Probability Plot better reflects Normality. The Percentile Section gives various percentile values and the corresponding confidence intervals. The Stem-Leaf Plot shows each value individually in the distribution. We hope you have enjoyed this overview of the Descriptive Statistics procedure. We suggest you download and install the free trial to learn more.

NCSS Statistical Software (Product Demo)

04:11
In this video we’ll show you how easy it is to perform a statistical analysis with NCSS. As an example, we’ll analyze a dataset that includes height and weight measurements from 14 men and 6 women. The goal of the analysis will be to create a model that can be used to predict a male’s weight based on his height. The dataset includes records for both males and females, so we’ll need to exclude the females before running the analysis. To open the dataset, click Open on the toolbar and then select the file. We’ll load a dataset called “Regression” for this example. If your data are stored in another format like Excel or Access, that’s no problem because NCSS imports all major statistical and data file formats. The Summary Statistics table provides quick summaries of the data in each column. It’s easy to change the statistics that are shown in the table. Each time the data are changed, the summary statistics table is automatically updated. In this dataset, gender is stored in the 3rd column, so we’ll set a filter there so that only males are included in the analysis. Simple point-and-click tools make this easy! Notice that the display changes to indicate that some rows are now being excluded. The summary table is also updated to reflect the newly-filtered data. NCSS includes a comprehensive list of statistics and graphic procedures. To perform a simple linear regression, use the menu or the procedure navigator to locate and load the linear regression procedure. The procedure window makes it easy to set up the analysis because all of the options are located on a single input screen. As you mouse over the various options, the help pane provides in-depth information. If you’d like more help, click on the “Help” button to display the procedure documentation, which contains technical details and examples. Each procedure in NCSS is fully documented! Since our goal is to predict Weight based on Height we’ll select Weight as the dependent variable and Height as the independent variable. By default, all of the reports and plots we probably need are already selected, but let’s go to the Plots tab to edit the Y versus X scatterplot. We’ll choose new plot colors and include prediction-limit lines. Notice that the format window displays a sample graph so we can see how each option change affects the plot. With the options specified, click the green “Run” button to perform the analysis. The report is displayed in the output window. Use the navigation pane to quickly jump to various sections in the report. The regression estimation section of this report states the model we can use to make predictions about a man’s weight using height. The scatterplot gives a graphical representation of this relationship. Double-click the graph to enlarge it. All plots can easily be saved to any one of several file formats. You can also save the entire report or easily cut and paste individual sections into a document or presentation. As you can see, it’s easy to perform a statistical analysis and create compelling graphs in NCSS, all in a matter of minutes. NCSS is powerful, comprehensive, and easy-to-use… and if you ever have any questions, our support team of Ph.D. statisticians will be happy to assist you! How to run a one-way ANOVA followed by multiple comparisons tests with XLSTAT?

05:07
This video show how to run the following tutorial that is on our website: http://www.xlstat.com/en/support/tutorials/ano.htm The data correspond to an experiment where 4 new toothpaste formulas were each tested on 6 different patients in order to measure their effect on the whiteness of teeth. All patients had previously used the same toothpaste. Using the ANOVA function of XLSTAT we want to find out if the results differ according to the formula used and, if so, which formula is the most effective. The case is a one-way balanced ANOVA because there is only one factor - the formula - and the number of repetitions is the same for each formula.
