Hidden gold, The Beatles: Unlocking the stories Adelaide’s underground tunnels | Messenger

01:21
Hidden gold, The Beatles: Unlocking the stories Adelaide’s underground tunnels | Messenger video link:https://youtu.be/7fyi8t31dUc INorth Adelaide’s underground ‘water cathedral’ Cafe owner uncovers old tunnel and bridge under The Parade The truth about the Repat Hospital’s air raid shelter tunnels BENEATH the hustle and bustle of Adelaide’s shopping malls, hotels and even an elegant North Tce home there is a labyrinth of underground tunnels and rooms that give an insight in to the city’s past. Reporter Celeste Villani took a look at some of the most mysterious, pondering the tales they might tell if tunnels could talk. Beneath our city DEEP below the surface of Adelaide are tunnels and deserted rooms with whispered secrets begging to be told. Some are underneath former government houses, others are in shopping arcades, but one thing they have in common is they tell tales of South Australia’s past. Like the Adina Apartments — the former treasury — atop a network of tunnels used in the 1800s. There is no better man to tell its stories than National Trust of South Australia volunteer Grant Morgan who has been in the tour-guide game for at least 15 years. Most weeks he takes people through the tunnels as part of his volunteer work. “It’s got a lot of history to it, these ones,” Mr Morgan, 73, says. “There were two genuine tunnels, one used to go from here to the post office so government mail could be taken back and forth with some degree of security. “But also in Victoria Square there is a building, it is still there, the Torrens Building built in the 1880s … and there was a connecting tunnel between there (and the Treasury), but it has been blocked off. “There is even a legend of the tunnel going right down to Parliament House, but there is no evidence to prove it.” The old Treasury building — on which construction began around 1839 — was the centre of South Australia’s administrative and governmental affairs for more 130 years. The tunnels were the home of lithographic processing — or flat printing — in the 1880s for the production of maps for the survey office. Treasury vaults were used to store gold from Victoria to be smelted to make Adelaide pound coins. Historical documents say between 1852-53 nearly 13,000kg of gold was put away. But there are many stories of the tunnels — which are also used for Adelaide Fringe shows, weddings and other parties — that are yet to be told. “Somewhere around here there is a well, probably where you are standing, so if you disappear and there is a splash, that story has been settled,” he says. “And where those bricks are down the end, (an article I read) suggested that was the start of a tunnel. “According to the article, in those days there was a rather nasty thing called an initiation ceremony for new public servants. “Young male recruits would be dragged down here, undressed and hit with wet towels … a horrible thought. “The story was one young man refused to submit to the terrible torture and ran into the tunnel … and disappeared for one or two days then the government of the day said ‘brick it up’ so that never happened again.” Some say The Beatles used the tunnels to escape screaming fans during their 1964 Australian tour, and they were not the only musicians who took a shine to others around town. Musicians aplenty have played in the H-shaped tunnels, now intercepted by a bar, dance floor and stage, at The Lion Hotel.

Adani Indian Coal Mine in Australia gets opposed by Australian People

03:15
Indian Coal Mine in Australia gets opposed by Australian People . Barnaby Joyce's 'duck pond' claim under fire as Adani coal row deepens . Here's what we know about Adani and the Carmichael mine project . Barnaby Joyce has been called "irresponsible" by one of Australia's most senior conservationists after the Deputy Prime Minister dismissed wetlands adjoining Adani's Abbot Point coal port as little more than a "duck-shooting pond". The brawl over Adani's threats to the onshore environment and the Great Barrier Reef escalated as Liberal backbencher Sarah Henderson broke ranks to question a potential $1 billion government loan to develop rail infrastructure for the Indian conglomerate's proposed Carmichael mine in Queensland's Galilee Basin. Australian Conservation Council president Geoff Cousins said Mr Joyce had "failed to check his facts" on the Caley Valley wetlands, a 5000-hectare bird habitat that environmentalists say was damaged by coal dust contamination from the Adani terminal during cyclone Debbie. Mr Joyce this week played down the wetlands' ecological value, describing it as a "swamp" built for duck shooters. With approval granted for a permanent rail line and a temporary construction camp, Adani's much-touted and often doubted Carmichael coal mine has taken a large step closer to becoming a reality. So who and what is Adani? A multinational company based in Ahmedabad, India, Adani Group builds and operates mines, ports and power plants. The company has operations in coal, gas and renewable energy across India, Indonesia and Australia. Adani Mining chief executive Jeyakumar Janakaraj has faced scrutiny for failing to disclose that a company he ran in Africa was guilty of serious environmental breaches, despite being asked to do so in a letter from the Federal Environment Department. But Queensland Mines Minister Anthony Lynham has expressed confidence Adani will operate its Australian mine safely and that the Great Barrier Reef will be protected, with "200 stringent conditions placed on this project". How big is the mine project? Adani's $22 billion Carmichael mine will be built in the Galilee Basin, west of Rockhampton. Once complete, it will be Australia's largest coal mine, with six open-cut pits and up to five underground mines. The Queensland Government estimated the life span of the mine to be between 25 and 60 years. The newly approved 31.5 kilometres of permanent rail line will form part of a 389-kilometre heavy haul line from the mine in the Galilee Basin to the Abbot Point port, south of Townsville. Where will the coal go? The mine will supply Indian power plants with enough coal to generate electricity for up to 100 million people. Coal from the mine will be processed through the Abbot Point Coal Terminal, off the coast of Bowen in north Queensland. How many jobs will it generate? Adani has claimed the mine and related operations will generate 10,000 jobs, however the Land Court of Queensland rejected this. The court instead accepted the evidence of Adani's own expert witness, Dr Jerome Fahrer of ACIL Allen, who said that in net terms the Adani mine would increase average employment by about 1,200 jobs in north Queensland, and create 1,464 jobs Australia-wide. Who has challenged the mine legally and why? Environmental groups have listed multiple concerns about the mine's impact on the Great Barrier Reef and the expansion of Australia's coal sector. Over the past six years, Adani said there had been more than 10 appeals and judicial processes. Here are some of the highest profile Federal Court cases: What's the projected benefit to the economy? Planning Australia's biggest mine Step through the key events in the planning of Australia's biggest mining project, the Carmichael coal mine in remote central Queensland. Adani estimates the project will generate at least $16.5 billion for the Australian economy, but the final figure is dependent on the mine's lifespan. The State Government said it expected to receive many millions of dollars in mining royalties, which would be spent on upgrades for schools, hospitals and roads. "Resources are extremely important for everyone in Queensland," Mines Minister Anthony Lynham said. When will construction start? Earlier this year, the Queensland Government gave the project critical status to fast-track environmental and other approvals. The Government still has to approve a water licence and minor applications for power and road access before construction can start. Adani has said it hopes work on the mine will start in the first half of 2017. Thanks for watching. Subscribe to our channel. Thanks for watching. You look for a crack on the bank, and follow it out until you meet the "gold line" and there you suck it out with your dredge. Gold will be on the outside edge of a river gravel bar, at the head of the bar (large gold but usually beneath big boulders), and at the tail end of a bar (vast concentrations due to river bars forming in the shape of an airfoil and sucking fine gold to the tail end) but be small to microscopic at the tail end. Gold will travel down a river or stream in a line, usually off center of the high pressure water. Gold will settle behind a boulder. A good place to fish, can also be an excellent place to find gold. "Black sand" is iron ore that can be readilly identified in gravel bars and is a ready indicator that gold is probably present. The most effective and economical way for the average person to find paying concentrations of gold in a river or stream is with a simple ($80) sluice that you shovel into and the riffles retain gold, platinum, gems and anything heavy for you. Gold can be found up high on the old river channels and recovered with metal detectors, a gold wheel, a highbanker, or simply by identifying the material, shoveling it in your truck and working it out later in a wheel, or your simple stream sluice. The states which have gold in vast quantities are: Maine, Vermont, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, California, Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Oregon. The rest have gold as well, some in very good concentrations. All have gems of some kind that a sluice will seperate and hold. Good luck finding the gold of your dreams! #Abandoned : Behind the scenes searching for elusive crystal mine When things don't go as planned

10:13
I was out a week ago in search of abandoned Iceland spar Crystal mine and Garabaldi gold mine at a place called Lionsville Australia. I had the maps I had the gps , I had me boots on but I came away with nothing to show but a hole in the ground and some rocks.I thought I'd put this together to show that sometimes explores don't always go as planned and this explore was one of them. Unfortunately I lost a couple of hours searching for someone close by to inform them that I'd seen an injured bull near where I'd crossed the river but found no one and had to leave a note on some ones gate about five kms away from where I saw the bull that's how remote it is out there and it was the first house I could find.I got back to searching but the lantana was so thick I couldn't get through it and maybe a machete would have been a good idea. I was up and down creeks and gullies and hills and dales and around trees and ZIP! All I go for my troubles was some rocks and the hole that I couldn't see into properly anyway. I'd planned on camping the night but rain was starting to close in so decided to call a stop to the explore for another time. At least I know where not to look next time and I'll also see where that track up the hill went. Anyway, this is just a behind the scenes video of when things don't pan out when out exploring . Thanks for checking it out . See you next video. Here is a link to a video that will explain who Skippy is that I was referring too in the video. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9Lf5-8_i7g

INDIAN PACIFIC TRAIN Review – Luxury Train Travel with Great Southern Rail, Australia

07:55
Full article: http://sassyzengirl.com/indian-pacific-train-review/ The iconic transcontinental journey aboard one of Australia's most iconic luxury trains: Great Southern Railway's Indian Pacific Train. Soundtrack: "Eagle Rock" by Wes Hutchison The journey starts in Perth and first passes through the lovely Avon Valley before reaching more remote regions. The first day ends with a visit to the old gold mining town of Kalgoorlie, including a city tour and a bird's eye view of the saw called "Super Pit", a 3.6km wide open cut gold mine that operates 24/7. Overnight the Indian Pacific luxury train travels into the Nullarbor Plain, named after the Latin "null'arbor" = no tree. Midday reaches the small dwelling of Cook, once a thriving town of 200 literally in the middle of nowhere, but now reduced to a refueling stop for the Indian Pacific train and a population of 5. The vastness of the Australian continent becomes apparent on this day especially. Overnight the luxury train journey reaches Adelaide and the next morning begins with a city tour and excursion to Mount Lofty with spectacular views. From their Great Southern Rail continues through the Barossa Valley, a famous wine region and on to Broken Hil for the final excursion on this trip. The next morning, the Indian Pacific luxury train passes through the mythical Blue Mountains and finally reaches Sydney at midday. Luxury Train travels are a wonderful way to see beautiful scenery while enjoying style and pampering. The Indian Pacific and Ghan train offer that kind of exquisite experience in both their Gold and Platinum classes. Each cabin is fitted with private bathrooms and all meals and drinks are included as well as all off-train excursions. Outback, Northern Territory, Australia, Oceania

00:12
The Outback is the vast, remote, arid area of Australia. The term "the outback" is generally used to refer to locations that are comparatively more remote than those areas named "the bush" which, colloquially, can refer to any lands outside the main urban areas. Early European exploration of inland Australia was sporadic. More focus was on the more accessible and fertile coastal areas. The first party to successfully cross the Blue Mountains just outside Sydney was led by Gregory Blaxland in 1813, 25 years after the colony was established. People starting with John Oxley in 1817, 1818 and 1821, followed by Charles Sturt in 1829–1830 attempted to follow the westward-flowing rivers to find an "inland sea", but these were found to all flow into the Murray River and Darling River which turn south. Over the period 1858 to 1861, John McDouall Stuart led six expeditions north from Adelaide into the outback, culminating in successfully reaching the north coast of Australia and returning, without the loss of any of the party's members' lives. This contrasts with the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition in 1860–61 which was much better funded, but resulted in the deaths of three of the members of the transcontinental party. The Overland Telegraph line was constructed in the 1870s along the route identified by Stuart. Exploration of the outback continued in the 1950s when Len Beadell explored, surveyed and built many roads in support of the nuclear weapons tests at Emu Field and Maralinga and rocket testing on the Woomera Prohibited Area. Mineral exploration continues as new mineral deposits are identified and developed. While the early explorers used horses to cross the outback, the first woman to make the journey riding a horse was Anna Hingley, who rode from Broome to Cairns in 2006. Other than agriculture and tourism, the main economic activity in this vast and sparsely settled area is mining. Owing to the complete absence of mountain building and glaciation since the Permian (in many areas since the Cambrian) ages, the outback is extremely rich in iron, aluminium, manganese and uranium ores, and also contains major deposits of gold, nickel, iron, lead and zinc ores. Because of its size, the value of grazing and mining is considerable. Major mines and mining areas in the outback include opals at Coober Pedy, Lightning Ridge and White Cliffs, metals at Broken Hill, Tennant Creek, Olympic Dam and the remote Challenger Mine. Oil and gas are extracted in the Cooper Basin around Moomba. In Western Australia the Argyle diamond mine in the Kimberley (Western Australia) is the world's biggest producer of natural diamonds and contributes approximately one-third of the world's natural supply. The Pilbara region's economy is dominated by mining and petroleum industries. Most of Australia's iron ore is also mined in the Pilbara and it also has one of the world's major manganese mines. Because of the low and erratic rainfall over most of the outback, combined with soils which are usually not very fertile, inland Australia is relatively sparsely settled. More than 90 percent of Australians live in urban areas on the coast. However the outback and the history of its exploration and settlement provides Australians with a culturally valued backdrop, and stories of swagmen, squatters, and bushrangers are central to the national ethos. The song "Waltzing Matilda", which is about a swagman and squatters, is probably Australia's best internationally known and best-loved song. Aboriginal communities in outback regions have not been displaced as they have been in areas of intensive agriculture and large cities, in coastal areas. For this reason a significant proportion of Australia's indigenous population lives in the Outback, in areas such as the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara lands in northern South Australia. The total population of the Outback in Australia declined from 700,000 in 1996 to 690,000 in 2006. Largest decline was noted in Outback NT, while Kimberley and Pilbara showed population increase during the same period. The sex ratio is 1040 males for 1000 females and 17% of the total population is indigenous. The Royal Flying Doctor Service started service in 1928 and helps people who live in the outback of Australia. In former times, serious injuries or illnesses often meant death due to the lack of proper medical facilities and trained personnel. In most outback communities, the number of children is too small for a conventional school to operate. Children are educated at home by the School of the Air. Originally the teachers communicated with the children via radio, but now satellite telecommunication is used instead.
