Barrington Light Railway open day 2015 - industrial steam video
To mark the recent rebuilding of the Barrington Light Railway (BLR) Cemex held an Open Day on Saturday 26th September at the former Barrington Cement Works , Cambs., UK. The company opened the site from 9am to 12 pm for railway enthusiasts - before the public open day started at 1pm. During the day the short steam hauled train made trips from the Works to Foxton exchange sidings along the Barrington Light Railway, and to the quarry and back. Motive power was provided by Rocks by Rail. Class 66 No. 66118 worked the first service from a resurrected Barrington Quarry to Wembley on June 30, 2015. The service transports inert materials from the London construction market to Barrington, where it will be used to restore and fill the quarry, which previously supplied chalk to the, now closed, Barrington cement works. DBS runs two trains a day in a two-year contract with CEMEX. Each train is formed of 22 wagons and carry approximately 1,500 tonnes of material, the equivalent of around 75 lorry loads. Using rail freight to collect the inert material rather than moving them to landfill sites by road will reduce road traffic in London and decrease CO2 emissions. The Barrington Light Railway that links the quarry to the national network has recently been renovated by CEMEX to serve the site. This work included strengthening a bridge on the line to allow the passage of main line locomotives for the first time. The Barrington line has served the London construction industry for over 90 years. It was previously used to bring in fuel and raw materials into the cement plant and transport cement in bulk and bags from the plant to the capital for concrete production throughout the South East.

China steam finale - electric interlude at Pingzhuang and Yangbaoshan, September 2011
The first part of this video shows miners, the colliery yard and narrow gauge overhead electric trains at a mine at Yuanbaoshan in NE China in 2011. The second part of the video shows the large open cast mine at Pingzhuang which opened in 1958 and which is served mainly by East German LEW standard gauge electric locomotives, and a very brief look at a steam train serving the deep mines. The electric locomotives (1500 V DC BoBo-engines) are seen on the tracks behind the industrial complex tipping out loaded wagons and working to and from the open cast mine. The open cast mine is a fascinating system (but long past its glory days) with unusual electric veterans. The electric locomotives were built by VEB Lokomotivbau -- Elektrotechnische Werke 'Hans Beimler' of Hennigsdorf near Berlin (the site formerly occupied by AEG and Borsig plants, now a part of Bombardier), commonly known as LEW. This factory supplied a number of locomotives for the mining industry. LEW built three basic types of locomotives for open-pit mines: six-axle EL1 and four-axle EL2 for standard gauge and four-axle EL3 for the 900 mm gauge. All were based on pre-war AEG design (from late 1920s, further developed during WWII) and had many common features. Heavy, 150-tonne EL1s were built for export to the Soviet Union and China only, but two remaining types have found more widespread use. The first EL2s appeared in 1952 and subsequently this type was built in large numbers, enjoying a very long production run: last examples left the assembly lines in 1988. First deliveries were to open-pit mines in East Germany. Later EL2s were exported to the Soviet Union, China (186, between 1957 and 1984), Bulgaria and Poland. Despite comparatively young age, the EL2 class has already earned itself a heritage locomotive status: in December 2007, withdrawn 4-1124 (LEW 13605/1980) was plinthed at the Bombardier -- Werk Henningsdorf premises. The EL2 is a robust and straightforward machine with the Bo'Bo' axle arrangement, designed to haul heavy loads at a moderate speed. These somewhat archaic-looking, but efficient locomotives, are a reminder of the early years of electrification. A later video will show steam trains at Pingzhuang. For most people, railroads in Alaska and the Yukon are synonymous with the Alaska Railroad and the White Pass and Yukon Railroad whose passenger cars provide tourists with vistas of awe-inspiring terrain. That same terrain provided enormous challenges for early settlers of both territories. Railroads were an integral part of overcoming those challenges. Dozens of other railroads also laid track in Alaska, the Yukon, and northwest British Columbia and provided the means to transport supplies to settlements and to transport the region’s raw materials to outside markets. Steam Engine History
A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. Since the late 1700s steam engines have become a major source of mechanical power. The first applications were removing water from mines. In 1781 James Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotative motion. The engines could be sited anywhere that water and coal or wood fuel could be obtained. By 1883, engines that could provide 10,000 hp had become feasible. Steam engines could also be applied to vehicles such as traction engines and the railway locomotives which are commonly just called steam engines outside America. The stationary steam engine was a key component of the Industrial Revolution, allowing factories to locate where water power was unavailable. Today steam turbines generate about 90% of the electric power in the United States using a variety of heat sources. Steam engines are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separate from the combustion products. Non-combustion heat sources such as solar power, nuclear power or geothermal energy may be used. The ideal thermodynamic cycle used to analyze this process is called the Rankine cycle. In the cycle, water is heated into steam in a boiler until it reaches a high pressure. When expanded through pistons or turbines, mechanical work is done. The reduced-pressure steam is then condensed and pumped back into the boiler. In general usage, the term steam engine can refer to either the integrated steam plants (including boilers etc.) such as railway steam locomotives and portable engines, or may refer to the piston or turbine machinery alone, as in the beam engine and stationary steam engine. Specialized devices such as steam hammers and steam pile drivers are dependent on steam supplied from a separate boiler.

Presented by the Mead Atlanta Paper Company, Inc., PINE PACKS A PUNCH is a short film on the company’s operations in Georgia, which includes some emphasis on soil conservation. Produced by Robert M. Carson, this film shows the role the company (and Georgia’s timber industry) plays in the packaging industry. The film begins by discussing how agriculture has historically played a central role in Georgia’s economy, but the reliance on only a few crops—namely cotton—led to soil depletion and erosion. The barren land hit a breaking point during the 1930s, so Georgia began an initiative—the planting of native Georgia pine trees to solve the soil erosion and depletion problems. This initiative was primarily undertaken by the state’s pulp and paper industry. Restoration efforts were successful because of the quick growth of the pine trees native to Georgia; today, small tree farm operations (03:52) are providing the timber needed to fuel the demand for paper products throughout the country. Harvested pine is sent to mills like the Brunswick Pulp and Paper Company’s plant (04:22). Most of the pulpwood is supplied by private land owners and delivered to the mills by small independent truckers. Pine from more distant locations is brought in by rail. Plants like Brunswick’s turn timber into paper by using heavy duty cranes to load logs onto conveyer belts to be debarked (04:54). Logs drop into debarking drums (05:34) where the bark is stripped; the peeled logs move to chippers before being “cooked” (06:28), washed and screened (06:37), then made into pulp (06:47). Water is evaporated from the sheets of pulp, which is then trimmed and sheeted (07:40). Stacked sheets are weighed and loaded onto trucks, and sent off to be made into a variety of paper products. An aerial shot of the modern Rome Kraft Company mill (08:11) shows where Georgia Pine is manufactured into liner board, or Kraft paper board. Here, one of the world’s largest paper-making machines, the Conqueror (08:35), makes Kraft paper board at a rapid pace. At this mill, 12-ton Kraft board rolls are made (09:12), then cut into smaller rolls and loaded onto trucks for transportation. One of the world’s largest users of Kraft paper board is the Mead Atlanta Paper Company (10:58). Much of the packaging industry’s products is produced in Georgia, specifically by the Mead Atlanta Paper Company. Kraft paper is stored in mass (12:41) at the company’s modern packaging plant. Giant equipment moves the rolls of Kraft paper to production lines (13:10), where they are fed into a corrugator (13:40). Corrugated board is cut, printed, and scoured (14:17). The folder-tapper machine (14:50) folds and tapes or glues sheets, producing boxes ready to meet the needs of the merchant. The packaging industry doesn’t just produce cardboard packaging; the work of graphic artists and engineers contribute to new structures and artistic designs, impacting advertising and delivery of products. At the Mead Atlanta Paper Company, the cluster pack and bottle master carton are developed for advanced packaging of glass bottles, cans, and other items (17:38). The Mercury press (20:00) produces bottle-master carry-home cartons in bulk. Different printing machines produce specific packaging, such as the printers that di-cut cartons. Machines print colored graphics and product descriptions on the packaging, as well as producing complex folds. At the Mead laboratory (22:30), engineers and testing experts constantly test the designs of packages to ensure they hold up and meet merchant and consumer expectations. Companies like the Mead Atlanta Paper Company also provide their customers with other packaging services, such as the machines that wrap cartons around canned products—in this case, Libby’s Tomato Juice Handi-6 Pak (23:15). The film then shows Coca-Cola cartons being produced (24:08) then filled with bottles of Coca-Cola on the automation line. The film concludes by discussing how packaging helps merchants, such as grocery stores, price and stock products. It has the highest carbon content, the fewest impurities, and the highest calorific content of all types of coals, which also include bituminous coal and lignite. Anthracite is the most metamorphosed type of coal (but still represents low-grade metamorphism), in which the carbon content is between 92.1% and 98%. The term is applied to those varieties of coal which do not give off tarry or other hydrocarbon vapours when heated below their point of ignition. Anthracite ignites with difficulty and burns with a short, blue, and smokeless flame. Anthracite is categorized into standard grade, which is used mainly in power generation, and high grade (HG) and ultra high grade (UHG), the principal uses of which are in the metallurgy sector. Anthracite accounts for about 1% of global coal reserves, and is mined in only a few countries around the world. China accounts for the majority of global production; other producers are Russia, Ukraine, North Korea, Vietnam, the UK, Australia and the US. Total production in 2010 was 670 million tons... Other terms which refer to anthracite are black coal, hard coal, stone coal... blind coal... Kilkenny coal... crow coal... and black diamond. In the United States, anthracite coal history began in 1790 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with the discovery of coal made by the hunter Necho Allen in what is now known as the Coal Region. Legend has it that Allen fell asleep at the base of Broad Mountain and woke to the sight of a large fire because his campfire had ignited an outcropping of anthracite coal. By 1795, an anthracite-fired iron furnace had been built on the Schuylkill River. Anthracite was first experimentally burned as a residential heating fuel in the US on 11 February 1808, by Judge Jesse Fell in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on an open grate in a fireplace. Anthracite differs from wood in that it needs a draft from the bottom, and Judge Fell proved with his grate design that it was a viable heating fuel. In spring 1808, John and Abijah Smith shipped the first commercially mined load of anthracite down the Susquehanna River from Plymouth, Pennsylvania, marking the birth of commercial anthracite mining in the United States. From that first mine, production rose to an all-time high of over 100 million tons in 1917... From the late 19th century until the 1950s, anthracite was the most popular fuel for heating homes and other buildings in the northern United States, until it was supplanted first by oil burning systems and more recently by natural gas systems... China today mines by far the largest share of global anthracite production, accounting for more than three-quarters of global output. Most Chinese production is of standard-grade anthracite, which is used in power generation. Increased demand in China has made that country into a net importer of the fuel, mostly from Vietnam, another major producer of anthracite for power generation, although increasing domestic consumption in Vietnam means that exports may be scaled back. Current U.S. anthracite production averages around 5 million tons per year. Of that, about 1.8 million tons were mined in the state of Pennsylvania...

This is a video showing the build of the Walthers New River Mining Company. In this video I cover the complete build with unboxing to detailing. The Walthers New River Mine was a really fun build and I would recommend it for any modeler railroad or not, just fun to do. I use other things in this build including walkways, add an additional door and several other detail items that help this building really pop out and look great. Tichy Open Grate Platforms, Walthers Fire Escape and Walthers Roof Details all add so much to the realism on this model. Scratch building some awnings to kicked it up a notch I think! The unending stream of fish is seen at the 4:00 mark, being moved into a cannery and packaged for sale internationally. At 4:41, a ship of the Alaska Steam Ship Company is seen taking on supplies. At Fairbanks, placer mining is seen at the 4:50 mark, with soil eroded by being hit with water. Huge dredges are seen at the 5:30 mark. At 5:45, airplanes are seen at the Fairbanks Airport loading supplies for mining and trapping camps. This includes a small Pan Am aircraft. The Fairbanks train depot is shown at the 6:25 mark. The Matanuska Valley is seen at the 6:45 mark with its rich farms. Reindeer are seen at the 8:00 mark, with native Alaskans shown raising them for fur. Mink and fox farms are also shown. Steam trains at UK rail making plant, Workington 2002
This is a video of preserved steam locomotives pulling freight trains at a photographic charter at a former rail making plant in Cumbria, England. This was probably one of the most successful industrial charters ever, helped by brilliant weather over the three days. Production of steel rails at Moss Bay commenced in 1877. The plant used the Bessemer conversion method to produce steel quickly, a method developed by Sir Henry Bessemer in 1856 following close working links with a Workington iron company. The Bessemer Converter revolutionised steel production. The Moss Bay plant at Workington stayed at the forefront of steel rail production up until the transfer of its facilities to Scunthorpe, introducing alloy steel, austenitic manganese steel and heat-treated rails during its long and proud history. On 14th September 2002, Corus celebrated 125 years of rail making in Workington. Most of the previous week was a corporate celebration involving customers, suppliers and company staff invited to view displays, presentations, mill tours, and an exhibition. A large marquee hosted the main exhibition with displays from Corus, their business partners, service providers and an archive of old photographs and memorabilia. The mill was working late on Tuesday and Thursday and tours were given at these times to invited guests. On Friday 13 September the site was handed over to steam charter photographic event. Enthusiasts saw visiting steam locomotives haul trains throughout the site and in to the port of Workington. On Saturday 14th September, the site was open to the public for a steam, diesel & bus rally. This included: Three steam locomotives: Ex Midland Railway half-cab 0-6-0T (formerly used at Staveley Iron & Steel Works) :41708, a Peckett 0-4-0ST No 2084 " F.C. Tingey" and a Bagnall 0-4-0ST "Hawarden". The operating debut of Haig Colliery Mining museum's Hunslet 0-4-0 diesel shunting locomotive (formerly in use at RNAD Broughton Moor). Visiting main line diesel locomotives from EWS & DRS Railway companies. Diesel locomotive classes 20, 37, & 66. A celebration of 30 years since the production of Leyland National buses at nearby Lillyhall. Lifeboat open day Lifting equipment, steam road lorry, narrow gauge locomotive and fairground organ displays. A bus and commercial vehicle rally,including some from the Glasgow Bus Museum. A free bus service linking car parks, the town bus station and the lifeboat station using a mixture of preserved classic buses and examples of the most modern bus types currently in service. This video features part of the steam charter. Later videos will cover the remainder of the celebration. Sady the works closed and was demolished when rail production was transferred to Scunthorpe. As in the USA and Europe, older industrial areas have been reduced to wasteland.
