What is SAFETY ENGINEERING? What does SAFETY ENGINEERING mean? SAFETY ENGINEERING meaning

What is SAFETY ENGINEERING? What does SAFETY ENGINEERING mean? SAFETY ENGINEERING meaning - SAFETY ENGINEERING definition - SAFETY ENGINEERING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Safety engineering is an engineering discipline which assures that engineered systems provide acceptable levels of safety. It is strongly related to industrial engineering/systems engineering, and the subset system safety engineering. Safety engineering assures that a life-critical system behaves as needed, even when components fail. Analysis techniques can be split into two categories: qualitative and quantitative methods. Both approaches share the goal of finding causal dependencies between a hazard on system level and failures of individual components. Qualitative approaches focus on the question "What must go wrong, such that a system hazard may occur?", while quantitative methods aim at providing estimations about probabilities, rates and/or severity of consequences. The complexity of the technical systems such as Improvements of Design and Materials, Planned Inspections, Fool-proof design, and Backup Redundancy decreases risk and increases the cost. The risk can be decreased to ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) or ALAPA (as low as practically achievable) levels. Traditionally, safety analysis techniques rely solely on skill and expertise of the safety engineer. In the last decade model-based approaches have become prominent. In contrast to traditional methods, model-based techniques try to derive relationships between causes and consequences from some sort of model of the system. The two most common fault modeling techniques are called failure mode and effects analysis and fault tree analysis. These techniques are just ways of finding problems and of making plans to cope with failures, as in probabilistic risk assessment. One of the earliest complete studies using this technique on a commercial nuclear plant was the WASH-1400 study, also known as the Reactor Safety Study or the Rasmussen Report. sually a failure in safety-certified systems is acceptable if, on average, less than one life per 109 hours of continuous operation is lost to failure.{as per FAA document AC 25.1309-1A} Most Western nuclear reactors, medical equipment, and commercial aircraft are certified to this level. The cost versus loss of lives has been considered appropriate at this level (by FAA for aircraft systems under Federal Aviation Regulations). Once a failure mode is identified, it can usually be mitigated by adding extra or redundant equipment to the system. For example, nuclear reactors contain dangerous radiation, and nuclear reactions can cause so much heat that no substance might contain them. Therefore, reactors have emergency core cooling systems to keep the temperature down, shielding to contain the radiation, and engineered barriers (usually several, nested, surmounted by a containment building) to prevent accidental leakage. Safety-critical systems are commonly required to permit no single event or component failure to result in a catastrophic failure mode. Most biological organisms have a certain amount of redundancy: multiple organs, multiple limbs, etc. For any given failure, a fail-over or redundancy can almost always be designed and incorporated into a system.

Riaan Bergh is the business manager of three mechanical testing laboratories at the CSIR. These labs provide specialised strength and safety testing services that allow mining, manufacturing, transport and construction companies, and heavy industry to test products to comply with safety requirements. In the rope testing lab, for example, steel rope used in mines is subjected to destructive tensile testing to determine the force it can withstand and how much it stretches before it snaps. In the self-contained self-rescuer lab, Bergh and his engineering team test devices that a miner trapped underground can use to produce oxygen by means of a chemical reaction. The third lab is the mechanical testing lab, which ensures the safety of equipment involved in lifting and support structures in mines and other industries.

What does an Environmental Engineer do?

08:14
Environmental Engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the application of scientific and engineering principles for: 1) protection of human populations from the effects of adverse environmental factors; 2) protection of environments, both local and global, from the potentially deleterious effects of natural and human activities; and, 3) improvement of environmental quality. Environmental engineering can also be described as a branch of applied science and technology that addresses the issue of energy preservation, production asset and control of waste from human and animal activities. Furthermore, it is concerned with finding plausible solutions in the field of public health, such as waterborne diseases, implementing laws which promote adequate sanitation in urban, rural and recreational areas. It involves waste water management and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, radiation protection, industrial hygiene, environmental sustainability, and public health issues as well as a knowledge of environmental engineering law. It also includes studies on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects. Environmental engineers study the effect of technological advances on the environment. To do so, they conduct studies on hazardous-waste management to evaluate the significance of such hazards, advise on treatment and containment, and develop regulations to prevent mishaps. Environmental engineers also design municipal water supply and industrial wastewater treatment systems. as well as address local and worldwide environmental issues such as the effects of acid rain, global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution and air pollution from automobile exhausts and industrial sources. At many universities, environmental engineering programs follow either the department of civil engineering or the department of chemical engineering at engineering faculties. Environmental "civil" engineers focus on hydrology, water resources management, bioremediation, and water treatment plant design. Environmental "chemical" engineers, on the other hand, focus on environmental chemistry, advanced air and water treatment technologies and separation processes. Additionally, engineers are more frequently obtaining specialized training in law (J.D.) and are utilizing their technical expertise in the practices of environmental engineering law.

SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Mining Machinery Engineering is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering that applies the principles of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and mining engineering for analysis, design, manufacturing and maintenance of mining equipment. It includes study of various aspects of equipment used in earthworks, mineral processing, bulk material handling, drilling and construction. Surface mining equipment evolved at a high pace in the 20th century as the scale of mining grew up. In the first twenty years of the 1900s, steam power was largely replaced by internal combustion engines and electric motors. Till the 1970s such equipment mainly used mechanical system and cables for power transmission after which they started to be replaced by hydraulic drive system for small machines. However, mechanical and cable drives are still dominant in large machines. Similar development took place in the development of underground machinery. Drilling and blasting replaced manual cutting of ores. Lately, use of continuous mining machines has become order of the day to comply with environmental regulations, protect surface features and also to achieve increased production rate. As the concern for safety in mines increased and highly stringent regulations were put in place, it required mining machinery engineers to be highly conversant with such regulations. Since Mining Machinery Engineering is a wholesome branch, the course of which covers disciplines like Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Mineral Engineering, Electrical Engineering, the employment opportunities are tremendous. Mining Machinery Engineering provides excellent career opportunities in various industries such as mining, heavy earth moving equipment, construction industry, mineral processing and other related industries. It is recognized by the Ministry of Labor, Government of India as equivalent to mechanical and electrical engineering for working in mines. The unique branch of Mining Machinery has a plethora of recruitment scope. Every single engineer of Mining Machinery Engineering has a vast on site experience of Machines deployed in both opencast as well as underground mines along with this, students are well versed with various bulk solid handling equipment like crushers, conveyors, feeders etc. The course of Mining Machinery Engineering also caters to construction equipment like Motor Graders, Dozers, Compactors etc. The amount of cost saved by the company hiring Mining Machinery Engineering graduates is quite high as every Mining Machinery Engineer has a multi-disciplinary approach towards solving problems owing to their vast area of expertise.

Bird Construction: Safety Orientation

18:12
In keeping with Bird's goal to be a safety leader within our industry, we continue to explore opportunities and initiatives to ensure and support safe production on all our projects. One such initiative, undertaken in response to feedback from our superintendents and other site personnel across the country, was the development of an orientation video to be shown to all new workers to our sites. The video is intended to ensure greater consistency in the level and scope of orientation material covered, thus improving our own due diligence in ensuring that all workers are appropriately informed of safety expectations and requirements at Bird before commencing work. It is important to note that this video is used in conjunction with a site-specific orientation, delivered by site personnel, on the activities and risks associated with site conditions and work currently underway or planned, as well as the location of site facilities and details regarding site emergency procedures. This is an exciting new tool in our collective safety toolbox and another example of our commitment to ensuring that Bird is a safety leader within the construction industry and that all workers on our sites and in our offices go home every day just as healthy and safe as they arrived. Importantly, it is also a tool derived from input received from our site personnel themselves -- the people who have the opportunity to see firsthand every day where we can better manage risk and better ensure worker safety. As always, Bird is committed to being responsive to those needs and to proactively identifying and addressing opportunities for continuous improvement in our safety program. About Bird Construction: As a leading general contractor in Canada, Bird turns ideas into reality through a tradition of building trust, delivering exceptional client service and creating value. With more than 95 years of experience in the construction industry, Bird's resume includes pre-construction and construction services to a long list of new and repeat clients. With its broad market reach, Bird's clients include leading firms in the multi-tenant residential, commercial, institutional, retail, industrial, water and wastewater, mining, energy and civil sectors.

What is STATIONARY ENGINEER? What does STATIONARY ENGINEER mean? STATIONARY ENGINEER meaning

04:46
What is STATIONARY ENGINEER? What does STATIONARY ENGINEER mean? STATIONARY ENGINEER meaning - STATIONARY ENGINEER definition - STATIONARY ENGINEER explanation. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A stationary engineer, sometimes called an operating engineer, or a power engineer, operates industrial machinery and equipment that provides energy in various forms. Power engineers are trained in many areas, including mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrical, metallurgical, computer, and a wide range of safety skills. They typically work in factories, office buildings, hospitals, warehouses, power generation plants, industrial facilities, and residential and commercial buildings. Power engineers are responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of a wide range of equipment including boilers, steam turbines, gas turbines, pumps, gas compressors, generators, motors, air conditioning systems, heat exchangers, refrigeration equipment, heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) that may be directly (duct burners) or indirectly fired (gas turbine exhaust heat collectors), hot water generators, and refrigeration machinery in addition to its associated auxiliary equipment (air compressors, natural gas compressors, electrical switchgear, pumps, etc.). Power engineers may hold various titles, such as boiler attendant or fitter. In Canada, Power Engineers are ranked by classes. Fifth class being the starting point and First class being the highest level attained. However in India there are only two classes – Ist class and 2nd class. This is a national standard in Canada and India but America isn't quite so organized in this regard. In the United States, stationary engineers must be licensed in several cities and states. The New York City Department of Buildings requires a Stationary Engineer's License to practice in the City of New York; to obtain the license one must pass a written and practical exam and have at least five years' experience working directly under a licensed stationary engineer, or one year if in possession of a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. Holders of the Stationary Engineer's License primarily work in large power generation facilities, such as cogeneration power plants, peaking units, and large central heating and refrigeration plants (CHRPs). For the State of California, Stationary Engineers are the State of California Military Department's sole source of Airfield Lighting and Repair. The stationary engineering trade emerged during the Industrial Revolution. The group includes railroad engineers and marine engineers. Famous people who began their working lives in this trade include George Stephenson and Henry Ford. The early steam engines developed by Thomas Savery and Thomas Newcomen which drew water from mines and the industrial steam engines perfected by James Watt and others employed the ancestors of today's engineers. Railroad engineers operated early steam locomotives and continue to operate trains today. The traditions and classification of the engineer were developed to the greatest extent by marine engineers who worked in the engine rooms of the great ocean liners in the 19th and 20th centuries. The use of the title "engineer" by Power engineers has been challenged in court by university-educated professional engineers; however, the stationary engineers have prevailed to date. The job of today's engineer has been greatly changed by computers and automation as well as the replacement of steam engines on ships and trains. Workers have adapted to the challenges of the changing job market. Many Power engineers are becoming more involved with the technical aspect of the job as it has shifted toward a dependence on building automation. Building and central plant operations are now relying heavily on direct digital controls; and as such the engineer is required to be much more computer literate to work with the BAS (Building Automation System).
