SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Svetan Pejic, Owner of the salt mine (part out of vision): "Due to climate changes and distribution of summer rains in our area, for a third year in a row our salt mine harvesting is late. Mostly, looking at statistic data, harvesting should start June 15th. For the last 20 years, the average amount of collected salt was approximately 2000 tons. In the last three years only 400-500 tons. The best harvest was in the year 1611, 6011 tons, in the times when salt was paid by gold." 4. Various men raking salt from bottom of a pool 5. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Svetan Pejic, Owner of the salt mine (partially out of vision): "Experts claim, Ston's salt mine is oldest sea salt mine in Europe, the town of Ston and the walls were established because of salt. The majority of the Dubrovnik Republic's income came from salt. The way that salt was produced before Roman times, in the Dubrovnik Republic, is the same nowadays: in a natural way, with only sea, sun and wind." 27. Various of workers pushing wagons with salt 28. Wide, worker hooking a wagon to be pulled to the warehouse 29. Workers chat as a train moves behind LEAD IN In a Croatian town, salt is still being harvested by hand just as it was 1,000 years ago. The salt works in Ston, a coastal town just north of Croatia's Adriatic pearl, Dubrovnik, are said to date back to Roman times. STORYLINE They do it as their fathers did, and their fathers before them, and their forefathers before that, over the centuries. Salt is harvested by shovel at one of the oldest of the few remaining natural salt works in Europe. The first written mention of the salt harvest was in 1272 in the Statutes of the Ragusan Republic - a small, independent state around Ragusa, as Dubrovnik was known. The statutes set strict rules for the production, storage and sale of Ston's salt. It is Ston Bay's configuration that makes it a perfect place for the harvesting of salt. The sea flows in, and some of the salty water is caught in "pools" toward the shore. As the water moves through the series of pools, it evaporates, helped by dry winds and high temperatures, and becomes saltier. In the last row of 12 very shallow pools, each named long ago after local saints, salt is ready for collecting. Today, as with centuries before, workers dig the salt out with shovels and load it onto mine cars that carry it to the warehouse. For hundreds of years in the Ragusan Republic, which existed until 1808, salt was "white gold" and Ragusa based much of its prosperity on salt exports to the Turkish empire and elsewhere. It is believed that the 5.5-kilometre (3.3-mile) stone wall around Ston was built to protect the salt works. During its heyday at the main collection times, from April to October, the work was compulsory for all residents of Ston and nearby areas. Putting More Sand on Carlsbad's Beaches

02:56
The City of Carlsbad is doing its part to make sure there's plenty of sand on local beaches. Beaches are replenished with sand through three different partnerships the City of Carlsbad has established with local and regional agencies. From September to December, the region's shoreline will be enhanced with more than 1.4 million cubic yards of high-quality sand, equal to about 120,000 truckloads. The San Diego Association of Governments, known as SANDAG is coordinating the $28.5 million Regional Beach Sand Project with support from community leaders in the coastal areas. Funding comes from the cities of Carlsbad, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, Oceanside, and Solana Beach, as well as the California Department of Boating and Waterways. Coastal erosion is the wearing away of land and the removal of beach or dune sediments by wave action, tidal currents, wave currents, or drainage. Changes in the surrounding landscape have reduced the amount of sand that makes it to our beaches naturally. Sand on beaches is also lost during winter storms when waves carry much of the sand back out to the ocean floor. That means sand needs to be added to keep up with beach erosion. In Carlsbad, about every two years, the Agua Hedionda Lagoon is dredged to replenish the beach sand. A large dredging vessel will collect sand by dredging the bottom of the lagoon mouth and pumping the sand to the beach. This dredging project could add up to about a half million cubic yards of sand to Carlsbad beaches. The Batiquitos Lagoon is also dredged every few years as needed to ensure the lagoon is healthy for fish and wildlife, and this provides sand for south Carlsbad beaches. The process includes dredging the bottom of the lagoon basin west of Interstate-5 to keep it deep enough to allow for the tides to keep the lagoon free from silt. Another benefit of the dredging is that it improves natural nesting areas for many endangered bird and fish species. The City of Carlsbad works on this project with the California Department of Fish and Game, which pays for this project. The goal of these partnership projects is to restore eroded beaches, support local tourism, and preserve recreational opportunities. So the next time you visit a Carlsbad beach, you'll know the beach sand is there in part because of Mother Nature and in part because of the strong partnerships between the City of Carlsbad and other agencies committed to preserving this essential part of the quality of life in Carlsbad.

By tectonic forces these minerals and rocks came to the surface of the Sierra Nevada,[83] and eroded. Water carried the exposed gold downstream and deposited it in quiet gravel beds along the sides of old rivers and streams. The forty-niners first focused their efforts on these deposits of gold.[86] Because the gold in the California gravel beds was so richly concentrated, early forty-niners were able to retrieve loose gold flakes and nuggets with their hands, or simply "pan" for gold in rivers and streams. However, panning cannot take place on a large scale, and industrious miners and groups of miners graduated to placer mining, using "cradles" and "rockers" or "long-toms" to process larger volumes of gravel. Miners would also engage in "coyoteing", a method that involved digging a shaft 6 to 13 meters (20 to 43 ft) deep into placer deposits along a stream. Tunnels were then dug in all directions to reach the richest veins of pay dirt. Drone Metal Detecting

Corals of the Deep - Full Episode

26:47
In the deep waters off Florida’s Atlantic coast grow magnificent structures, capable of reaching 300 feet in height. These are the corals of the deep sea. Porcelain-white and centuries old, few humans have seen these delicate reefs. The Ivory Tree Coral, Oculina varicosa, and Lophelia pertusa flourish in harsh, sunless environments, yet these branch-like formations provide food and shelter for a variety of deepwater organisms. Rich in biodiversity, this mysterious underwater kingdom is threatened by destructive fishing practices such as bottom trawling. However, a recently proposed 23,000 square mile marine protected area could save these fragile reefs from ruin. Changing Seas follows scientists 50 miles offshore on a unique expedition to further pinpoint the locations of these thousand-year-old coral mounds. Using cutting-edge technology, experts from three of the country’s premier ocean research institutions have joined forces to investigate portions of Florida’s seafloor. The science team lives aboard a research vessel for seven days. Their mission: To scan the ocean bottom and create detailed maps using specially built Autonomous Underwater Vehicles or AUVs. Their results could help save Florida’s corals of the deep. But what will they find? Learn more at www.changingseas.tv or facebook.com/changingseas

Meet Crossrail's giant tunnelling machines

06:34
Crossrail will use eight tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to construct the new tunnels under London. These huge machines will work 24 hours a day beneath the streets of London, excavating large volumes of ground and erecting the concrete tunnel lining. Each machine has a rotating cutter head at the front, and a series of trailers behind, housing all the mechanical and electrical equipment required for the excavation of material. To construct the 42km of tunnel required for Crossrail the tunnel boring machines will undertake ten individual tunnel drives to construct the 6.2m diameter rail tunnels. Each TBM weighs approximately 1000 tonnes and will be up to 140m in length with an external diameter of 7.1m. This allows for an inside tunnel diameter of 6.2m once the concrete tunnel segments are in place. Each TBM will be operated by a 'tunnel gang' comprising of around twenty people - twelve people on the TBM itself and eight people working from the rear of the machine to above ground. To find out more about our tunnel boring machines visit: http://www.crossrail.co.uk/tunnelling/ http://www.crossrail.co.uk/

9 Unsolved Sin & Mysteries from the American Old West

9 Unsolved Sin & Mysteries from the American Old West (A ship isn’t usually something you associate with the Wild West). 👉 Thank for watching! If You enjoy it, please Like and Subcribe this Chanel. 👈 The American West has long been a place for cowboys, gunslingers, and hidden treasure. However, there’s been questions about the true fate of certain outlaws, along with other mysteries that have fascinated people for around a hundred years, and that have never been solved or explained by modern historians. 1. Butch Cassidy’s Death. Born Robert LeRoy Parker in Beaver, Utah, on April 13, 1866, the bandit who assumed the alias Butch Cassidy remains an icon, of the Old West even 150 years after his birth. As with many legendary outlaws... 2. Victorio Peak Treasure. The mystery boils down to a single question: Was Milton (Doc) Noss telling the truth, or just a tall tale?... 3. Bill Longley’s Execution. Outlaw Wild Bill Longley twice cheated the noose, but popular Texas folklore that he got away a third time is wrong. Scientists say tests of the body in his grave show that it is, indeed, Longley.... 4. Cochise’s Burial Site. Chief Cochise, one of the great leaders of the Apache Indians, in their battles with the Anglo Americans, dies on the Chiricahua reservation in southeastern Arizona.... 5. Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine. One legendary treasure that has led many astray, and ruined many lives is the Lost Dutchman Mine, supposedly located in the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix, Arizona. As with most legends... 6. Pancho Villa’s Head. Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa was born Doroteo Arango on June 5, 1878, in San Juan del Rio, Durango. Villa spent much of his youth helping out on his parents' farm.... 7. Thunderbirds. One of the West’s most fascinating cold cases involves a flying monster, a dying town and a disappearing photograph.... 8. Billy the Kid’s Death. Sheriff Pat Garrett shoots Henry McCarty, popularly known as Billy the Kid, to death at the Maxwell Ranch in New Mexico.... 9. The Desert Ship. Of all the legends about lost and found, and lost again treasures in the Southwest, there is none more mystifying than the enduring tale of a large sailing vessel which lies... Alex Epstein: "The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels" | Talks at Google

01:03:26
Energy philosopher Alex Epstein, author of The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels, challenges conventional wisdom about the fossil fuel industry and argues that if we look carefully at the positives and negatives of all our energy alternatives, we have a moral obligation to use more fossil fuels, not less. Exoplanets: The Quest for Strange New Worlds (live public talk)

01:25:25
Original air date: January 12 at 7 p.m. PT (10 p.m. ET, 0300 UTC) Planets orbiting other stars, or exoplanets, have become an important field of astronomical study over the past two and a half decades. Recent findings from NASA's Kepler mission suggest that nearly every star you see in the night sky probably has exoplanets orbiting it. The number of confirmed exoplanets is now a few thousand. This talk will present a brief history of exoplanet discoveries, the story of the “super-Saturn” extrasolar ring system, and summarize NASA’s ongoing future plans to discover and characterize “strange new worlds.” Speaker: Eric Mamajek, Deputy Program Chief Scientist, NASA Exoplanet Exploration Program, JPL
Top 7 Biggest and Largest Machines in the World 2017 || Extreme Machines in the World with Footage

05:12
Top 7 Biggest and Largest Machines in the World 2017 || Top 7 Extreme Machines in the World || With Real Footage || SLJ 900: The SLJ900/32, made by the Beijing Wowjoint Machinery Company, is a 580 ton, 300 foot long and 24 foot wide mega machine that looks more like a train than a crane and acts a lot like a Stretch Armstrong action figure. Instead of using a stationary or crawler crane to lift the girder of a bridge from the ground and drop it into its place, the SLJ900/32 drives the girder onto the previously placed girder, slowly extends its arms to the next support platform, pushes the girder towards the front of the machine and then lowers it into place. NASA Crawler: The crawler-transporters, formally known as the Missile Crawler Transporter Facilities, are a pair of tracked vehicles used to transport spacecraft from NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) along the Crawlerway to Launch Complex 39. They were originally used to transport the Saturn IB and Saturn V rockets during the Apollo, Skylab and Apollo–Soyuz programs. They were then used to transport Space Shuttles from 1981 to 2011. The crawler-transporters carry vehicles on the Mobile Launcher Platform, and after each launch return to the pad to take the platform back to the VAB. Bagger 288: Bagger 288 (Excavator 288), built by the German company Krupp for the energy and mining firm Rheinbraun, is a bucket-wheel excavator or mobile strip mining machine. The Bagger 288 bucket-wheel excavator. When its construction was completed in 1978, Bagger 288 superseded Big Muskie as the heaviest land vehicle in the world, at 13,500 tons.[1] It took five years to design and manufacture, and five years to assemble with total cost reaching $100 million.[2] In 1995, it was itself superseded by the slightly heavier Bagger 293 (14,200 tons). NASA's Crawler-Transporter still remains the largest self-powered land vehicle in the world, since bucket-wheel excavators are powered by an external power source, and the Overburden Conveyor Bridge F60s hold the title of largest land vehicle of any type by physical dimensions.SK 3500D: Tunnel Cutter: A tunnel boring machine (TBM), also known as a "mole", is a machine used to excavate tunnels with a circular cross section through a variety of soil and rock strata. They may also be used for microtunneling. They can bore through anything from hard rock to sand. Tunnel diameters can range from a metre (done with micro-TBMs) to 19.25 metres to date. Tunnels of less than a metre or so in diameter are typically done using trenchless construction methods or horizontal directional drilling rather than TBMs. Wave Power Generator: Wave power is the transport of energy by wind waves, and the capture of that energy to do useful work – for example, electricity generation, water desalination, or the pumping of water (into reservoirs). A machine able to exploit wave power is generally known as a wave energy converter (WEC). Wave power is distinct from the diurnal flux of tidal power and the steady gyre of ocean currents. Wave-power generation is not currently a widely employed commercial technology, although there have been attempts to use it since at least 1890.[1] In 2008, the first experimental wave farm was opened in Portugal, at the Aguçadoura Wave Park. 2015 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Water, Water

01:46:07
Join host and moderator Neil deGrasse Tyson and his panel of experts for a lively discussion about the past, present, and future of water on Earth. Earth is the only place in our solar system with liquid water on its surface. Even though water makes up only 0.03 percent of the Earth’s total mass, it covers 70 percent of the planet’s surface. Where did this water come from? Why is it mostly in liquid form? How much of it is drinkable and how vulnerable is this valuable resource? Will we ever run out? Will wars of the future be fought over access to it? Will future generations harness water from space? Is water essential to all life in the universe—or just to life on Earth? #IsaacAsimov #debates #Earth #water #panelists #naturalresources 2015 Asimov Panelists include: -Heidi Hammel, Planetary Astronomer,Executive Vice President of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy -Tess Russo,Hydrologist,Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Pennsylvania State University  -Ellen Stofan, Planetary Geologist, Chief Scientist of NASA -Kathryn Sullivan, Geologist, Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Administrator -Charles Wald, General, U.S. Air Force, Retired; Director and Senior Advisor to the aerospace and defense industry for Deloitte LP The late Dr. Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific and influential authors of our time, was a dear friend and supporter of the American Museum of Natural History.  In his memory, the Hayden Planetarium is honored to host the annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate — generously endowed by relatives, friends, and admirers of Isaac Asimov and his work — bringing the finest minds in the world to the Museum each year to debate pressing questions on the frontier of scientific discovery.  Proceeds from ticket sales of the Isaac Asimov Memorial Debates benefit the scientific and educational programs of the Hayden Planetarium. 2017 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: De-Extinction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LnAtMeSVeY&index=1&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2016 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Is the Universe a Simulation? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgSZA3NPpBs&index=2&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2015 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Water, Water https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSF79uS3t04&index=3&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2014 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Selling Space https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbmFeEIKBFI&index=4&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2013 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: The Existence of Nothing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OLz6uUuMp8&index=5&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2012 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Faster Than the Speed of Light https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qlLW60wOjo&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&index=6 2011 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: The Theory of Everything https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb8_3BUHcuw&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&index=7 Rose Center Anniversary Isaac Asimov Debate: Is Earth Unique? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ji_GdAk9vU&index=8&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&t=25s *** Subscribe to our channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=AMNHorg Check out our full video catalog: http://www.youtube.com/user/AMNHorg Facebook: http://fb.com/naturalhistory Twitter: http://twitter.com/amnh Tumblr: http://amnhnyc.tumblr.com/ Instagram: http://instagram.com/amnh This video and all media incorporated herein (including text, images, and audio) are the property of the American Museum of Natural History or its licensors, all rights reserved. Here be Dragons 2018: Track A

05:15:25
Sea monsters such as the kraken, prister, and rosmarus indicated uncharted territory on elaborate new maps of the world in medieval times. Despite many advances in mapping technology and data acquisition in the last 500 years, our ocean remains largely uncharted and poorly understood. Here be Dragons convened explorers, innovators, artists, scientists, and storytellers to identify the uncharted territories that still exist in ocean exploration and storytelling. In response, MIT students will work with explorers to develop and present collaborative projects to deploy new and emerging technologies in the field that address gaps in our understanding and sharing of the ocean. Select proposals will be funded for Rapid Field Deployments. In collaboration with the National Geographic Society and New England Aquarium. Mark Ruffalo, Marco Krapels, & Mark Z. Jacobson: "Power the World with Wind, Water and Sunlight"

01:04:55
What happens when you put a movie scientist in the room with a real scientist? You hope to inspire millions to take part in an energy revolution! Mark Ruffalo, known for his portrayal of Dr. Banner and the Incredible Hulk, will speak with Mark Jacobson of the Stanford Atmosphere/Energy Program and Marco Krapels of Rabobank about powering the world with wind, water and sunlight. Global warming, environmental pollution, and energy insecurity are three of the most significant problems facing the world today. This talk discusses a technical plan to solve these problems by powering 100% of the United States' and world's energy for all purposes, including electricity, transportation, industry, and heating/cooling, with wind, water, and sunlight (WWS) within 20-40 years. As part of the plan, we consider transmission infrastructure, resources, reliability, catastrophic risk, materials, costs, health effects, job creation, revenue streams, and policies needed. We discuss a detailed version of the plan for New York State and its potential application to California and other states. We also discuss the public engagement needed and how social media can help to implement the plan on the state, national, and international levels. About the Speakers: Mark A. Ruffalo is an Oscar-nominated actor and advocate of addressing climate change and renewable energy. In March 2011, Mark co-founded Water Defense to raise awareness about energy extraction impact on water and the public health. A regular contributor to the Guardian and the Huffington Post, Mark is a recent recipient of the Global Green Millennium Award for Environmental Leadership, and the Meera Gandhi Giving Back Foundation Award. He was named one of Time Magazine's "People Who Mattered" in 2011. Most recently, he played Dr. Banner and the Incredible Hulk in the box-office hit, The Avengers. Marco Krapels is the Executive Vice President of Rabobank N.A,,where he runs the commercial banking product groups including its capital markets and renewable energy finance divisions. He co-chairs the bank's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) committee, where he's initiated notable sustainability efforts, including a Rabobank solar/Tesla electric car project featured in the New York Times. Marco is co-founder and board member of Empowered by Light, which promotes renewable energy solutions for 1.6 billion people living without electricity. Mark Z. Jacobson is Director of the Atmosphere/Energy Program and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Woods Institute for the Environment and Senior Fellow of the Precourt Institute for Energy. He is on the Energy Efficiency and Renewables Advisory Committee to the U.S. Secretary of Energy. He co-authored a 2009 cover article in Scientific American and two more recent articles in Energy Policy with Dr. Mark DeLucchi of U.C. Davis on how to power the world with renewable energy.

Symposium on Blockchain for Robotic Systems

07:48:24
Robotic systems are revolutionizing applications from transportation to health care. However, many of the characteristics that make robots ideal for future applications—such as autonomy, self-learning, and knowledge sharing—also raise concerns about the evolution of the technology. Blockchain, an emerging technology that originated in the digital currency field, shows great potential to make robotic operations more secure, autonomous, flexible, and even profitable, thereby bridging the gap between purely scientific domains and real-world applications. This symposium seeks to move beyond the classical view of robotic systems to advance our understanding about the possibilities and limitations of combining state-of-the art robotic systems with blockchain technology. David Wilcock: Cabal Defeat is Looming (Russian Mainstream TV Show!)

02:22:57
21 million people in Russia and neighboring countries watched REN-TV reveal the imminent defeat of the New World Order in this stunning expose' with David Wilcock. This three-hour 8PM documentary revealed how 26 underground bases were mysteriously destroyed between August 22, 2011 and January 2012 -- and explores who may have done it. The Russians explore uncomfortable truths with remarkable new detail and clarity, including the transfer of Nazi scientists to America after World War II under Project Paperclip. Never before has a major television series so thoroughly revealed the international alliance that has formed to encircle and defeat the Cabal. Neil Keenan's epic multi-billion-dollar lawsuit against the United Nations and other Cabal entities is discussed, as well as Ben Fulford's own efforts to organize resistance efforts. Learn how the Federal Reserve deliberately created World War I and II to seize the world's gold -- and create a limitless supply of "bubble money" that could be printed out of thin air. The documentary ultimately stops short of naming BRICS -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- as the public face of this new alliance against the Federal Reserve. This alliance apparently now encompasses a majority of all countries in the world. The staff of REN-TV told us this show was wildly popular, reaching a stunning 21 million viewers. It is fast-paced and has an intense, dramatic musical score with lots of visuals. You may want to laugh or think this is all "crazy" -- but it was taken seriously enough to be developed into a major, prime-time special on a top Russian network. As David often has said, "if you throw up, you'll feel better" is a good analogy for what we all must learn in order to heal our planet. Without awareness there can be no resolution.
