[Research on Semantic Web, combining the Web with artificial intelligence] Takahira Yamaguchi's research group is studying the Semantic Web, which combines the Web and artificial intelligence. In the Semantic Web, software can be made to understand the meaning of Web pages, by adding headings called metadata to Web pages. The key technology for achieving this next-generation Semantic Web is called ontologies. Q. To put it simply, ontologies are like electronic dictionaries that enable software to understand the meaning of words. This research has been pursued not in the Internet field, but independently of the Internet, in the field of artificial intelligence. Yamaguchis group has developed a tool for semi-automatic construction from text to ontology, and released it as an open source program. Q. When such ontologies are constructed, they can be used to achieve Q&A systems using analysis engines, which are not possible with the current Internet. Suppose a user asks, for example, What is the average price of a condo in Tokyo? Were developing a system where the answer can be calculated using data and ontologies to give a reply automatically. In addition, Yamaguchis group is researching Semantic Robot Services. These combine the Semantic Web and robots, so several robots can collaborate while considering various things. Q. At present, the Internet is used mainly by searching, but as the next stage of processing, I think theres a lot of routine work; for example, when certified accountants do a variety of accounting processes. If all routine work could be done by the next-generation Internet, then specialists could concentrate on more advanced work. Wed like to create that sort of world. Q. It is said that the Semantic Web will take 5-10 years to become practical. But since last fall, theres been a major trend in this direction, and Yahoo has introduced the basic technologies for the Semantic Web in its search engine. Our students are working on next-generation Internet services by looking at such trends. A Service Innovation Course started at Keio Universitys Graduate School this year, and Yamaguchis group aims for students to suggest future Web services that anticipate the next-generation Web. The current generation of young people, who have grown up with the Web, are expected to become involved in education and research on service innovation.

What is SEMANTIC WEB? What does SEMANTIC WEB mean? SEMANTIC WEB meaning - SEMANTIC WEB explanation. The Semantic Web is an extension of the Web through standards by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The standards promote common data formats and exchange protocols on the Web, most fundamentally the Resource Description Framework (RDF). According to the W3C, "The Semantic Web provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries". The term was coined by Tim Berners-Lee for a web of data that can be processed by machines. While its critics have questioned its feasibility, proponents argue that applications in industry, biology and human sciences research have already proven the validity of the original concept. The 2001 Scientific American article by Berners-Lee, Hendler, and Lassila described an expected evolution of the existing Web to a Semantic Web. In 2006, Berners-Lee and colleagues stated that: "This simple idea…remains largely unrealized". In 2013, more than four million Web domains contained Semantic Web markup.

The 1st part of this talk focuses on what text mining is and some of the methods and available tools. The 2nd part looks at how to find articles on Europe PMC - a free literature resource for biomedical and health researchers - and how to build your own text mining pipeline (starts at 20:30 mins). The final part gives a nice case study showing how Europe PMC's pipeline was integrated into a new drug target validation platform called Open Targets (previously CTTV) (starts at 38:20 mins). With the mass adoption of the Internet in our daily lives, and the ability to capture high resolution data on its use, we are at the threshold of a fundamental shift not only in our understanding of the social and behavioral sciences (i.e. psychology, sociology, and economics), but also the ways in which we study them. Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) and Virtual Worlds (VWs) have become increasingly popular and have communities comprising tens of millions. They serve as unprecedented tools to theorize and empirically model the social and behavioral dynamics of individuals, groups, and networks within large communities. The preceding observation has led to a number of multi-disciplinary projects, involving teams of behavioral scientists and computational scientists, working together to develop novel methods and tools to explore the current limits of behavioral sciences. This talk consists of four parts. First, we describe findings from the Virtual World Exploratorium; a multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary project which uses data from commercial MMOGs and VWs to study many fields of social science, including sociology, social psychology, organization theory, group dynamics, macro-economics, etc. Results from investigations into various behavioral sciences will be presented. Second, we provide a survey of new approaches for behavioral informatics that are being developed by multi-disciplinary teams, and their successes. We will also introduce novel tools and techniques that are being used and/or developed as part of this research. Third, we will discuss some novel applications that are not yet there, but are just around the corner, and their associated research issues. Finally, we present commercial applications of Social Analytics research, based on our experiences with a start-up company that we've created.

Six years ago in Scientific American, Tim Berners-Lee, James Hendler and Ora Lassila unveiled a nascent vision of the Semantic Web: a highly interconnected network of data that could be easily accessed and understood by any desktop or handheld machine. They painted a future of intelligent software agents that would head out on the World Wide Web and automatically book flights and hotels for our trips, update our medical records and give us a single, customized answer to a particular question without our having to search for information or pore through results. Eric has recently co-authored a follow-up to that article in Scientific American where he argues that a wide variety of online Semantic Web applications are emerging, from VodaphoneΓÇÖs mobile phone service to BoeingΓÇÖs system for coordinating the work of vendors. What is more scientist and researchers are developing some of the most advanced uses of the technology including a system that pinpoints the genetic causes of heart disease and one that reveals the early stages of influenza outbreaks. Eric will explain how companies and universities working through the World Wide Web Consortium are developing standards to make the Semantic Web more accessible and easier to use.

Relational Duality: Unsupervised Extraction of Semantic Relations between Entities on the Web

Extracting semantic relations among entities is an important first step in various tasks in Web mining and natural language processing such as information extraction, relation detection, and social network mining. A relation can be expressed extensionally by stating all the instances of that relation or intensionally by defining all the paraphrases of that relation. For example, consider the ACQUISITION relation between two companies. An extensional definition of ACQUISITION contains all pairs of companies in which one company is acquired by another (e.g. (YouTube, Google)) or (Powerset, Microsoft)). On the other hand we can intensionally define ACQUISITION as the relation described by lexical patterns such as X is acquired by Y, or Y purchased X, where X and Y denote two companies. We use this dual representation of semantic relations to propose a novel sequential co-clustering algorithm that can extract numerous relations efficiently from unlabeled data. We provide an efficient heuristic to find the parameters of the proposed co-clustering algorithm. Using the clusters produced by the algorithm, we train an L1 regularized logistic regression model to identify the representative patterns that describe the relation expressed by each cluster. We evaluate the proposed method in three different tasks: measuring relational similarity between entity pairs, open information extraction (Open IE), and classifying relations in a social network system. Experiments conducted using a benchmark dataset show that the proposed method improves existing relational similarity measures. Moreover, the proposed method significantly outperforms the current state-of-the-art Open IE systems in terms of both precision and recall.

His main achievements are from the field of Text-Mining (analysis of large amounts of textual data), having leading role on scientific and applicative projects funded by European Commission, having projects with industries such as Microsoft Research, British Telecom, New York Times, Siemens, and organizing several international events on the related topics. He is also founder and CEO (from 2001 on) of the Quintelligence Company with the core business in transferring knowledge management and knowledge discovery/data mining expertise into marketable products and services. Marko is also co-founder of CyCorp Europe Company (European branch of US based Cycorp company) (from 2006 on) working in deep knowledge modeling and reasoning. Currently Marko co-manages (together with two co-managers) the team of 35 people where Marko’s role is management and active work with the scientific and technical part of the team of 20 researchers, research programmers and software engineers. The key activities of Marko’s team include development of new research ideas from innovation to research prototypes and industrial deployment through spin-off companies at later stages. The team collaboratively contributes into software platform Text-Garden enabling flexibility and efficiency in building solutions for analytic and semantic technologies.
