Prisoners offered reduced sentence in exchange for generating electricity

01:43
(10 Jul 2012) STORYLINE A small prison in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil encourages cellmates to shorten their sentence by pedalling on exercise bikes that generate energy to illuminate the town's roads. Inmate Ronaldo da Silva hops on a bike and pedals away furiously, clocking up several miles before he slows and jumps off. But despite all his efforts, Silva doesn't get far from the medium-security prison where he's serving a five-and-a-half year long sentence for robbing a bakery. In fact, he doesn't get anywhere at all because Silva's bike is stationary, bolted to the ground of the prison courtyard. The only place all his pedalling takes him is incrementally closer to his release. Silva is part of an innovative programme that allows inmates at a prison in Brazil's south eastern Minas Gerais state to shave days off their sentence in exchange for generating power to help illuminate the town at night. By pedalling, the inmates charge a battery that's used to power ten street lamps along the town's riverside promenade. For every three eight-hour days they spend on the bikes, Silva and the programme's other participants get one day knocked off their sentences. It is one of several new projects being implemented across Brazil, all aimed at thinning out the notoriously overcrowded prisons and cutting down on recidivism by helping restore inmates' sense of self-worth. Lambasted by critics as too soft on criminals, such initiatives are seen by their defenders as effective ways of breaking the cycle of violence that all too often plagues the country's penitentiaries. "Here, cycling, we feel more important and more useful. You feel better day-to-day," said Silva, who's already reduced his weight by four kilograms (nine pounds) and his sentence by 20 days. Clad in red, prison-issue sweat pants and matching T-shirts, he and his fellow cyclists hit the bikes at around nine in the morning and ride until about 5 pm, with breaks for lunch and an afternoon snack. With just four bikes, the project's eight participants take turns to cycle. "Today with our project, our idea is they can now exercise, lose weight and at the same time it also benefits them because after every three days of work, their sentence shortens by one day," said prison director Gilson Rafael da Silva. The two-month-old programme is the brainchild of the town's judge, Jose Henrique Mallmann, who said he got the idea from a story he read on the internet about gyms in the United States where electricity is generated by the exercise bikes. The municipal police contributed bicycles that had long been lingering in lost property and neighbourhood engineers then helped transform them into stationary exercise bikes, hooking them up to car batteries donated by local businesses. Area entrepreneurs also pitched in the converter used to transform the battery's charge into the 110 volts needed to power ten of the cast iron street lamps that dot the riverside promenade. Every night just before sunset, a guard drives the charged battery from the prison, on the outskirts of town, to the downtown promenade. He hooks it up to the converter and a few minutes later the ten street lamps begin to glow a soft white. For years the promenade was abandoned after it got dark, but now, newly illuminated, it now attracts dog walkers, joggers and couples walking arm-in-arm. Mixed Verb Tenses in English: Conditionals and IF clauses

14:54
How many verb tenses can you count in the following sentences? "If you practice every day, you will improve. But you also need to know that if you didn't develop good study habits in the past, you might have trouble in the future." There are several verb tenses in this excerpt, and they are all mixed together. But complex sentences like these are what make English a very rich and interesting language. In this challenging lesson, we will look at conditional sentences that mix tenses and even use the verb "will" in the "if" clause. Make sure to do the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/mixed-verb-tenses-in-english-conditionals-and-if-clauses/ to practice and perfect your understanding of mixed tenses. TRANSCRIPT Hi again. Welcome to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is a little bit tricky. It's grammar, it's conditionals, but we're going to look at "Mixed Conditionals". Now, before I get into the different types of ways that you can mix tenses and the conditionals, I want to do a very quick review of the conditionals that most of you learn in your ESL classes or your English... Other English classes, because these are the ones that are most commonly taught, and everybody, all your teachers want you to memorize these structures. The problem is then you might see mixed conditionals in other places, and you get all confused. Okay? I'm not going to get too deep into these, because you can find other good lessons by other engVid teachers who have already covered some of these on the site. I'm just going to do a quick review, and then I'll get into... Deeper into the mixed conditionals. So here are the four main types of conditionals you learn: "If I won the lottery, I'd buy a house." So this, just so we are clear, is "would", I've contracted it to "I'd". "If I won", I have simple past tense, plus "would" in the second clause, in the condition clause, in the result clause. "If I had known she was coming, I'd have come too." Okay? Here I have the past perfect, plus "would have" plus PP, past participle verb. Now, these are both unreal, mean... Meaning that they are hypothetical, they are imaginary. This is about a future or present unreal situation. I didn't win the lottery, I'm not buying a house; this is all just imagination. This is about the past. Now, the reason it is unreal is because I can't go and change the past. So, this didn't happen, and so this didn't happen. This is, again, imagination, but we're looking at the past. Okay? "If you boil water, it evaporates." If you notice here, I have simple present verb and simple present verb. This is a real conditional. It means it's true. Whenever you have a fact-okay?-a result is based on this condition and it's always true... By the way, "evaporates" means becomes steam, it goes away. Right? If you boil water, eventually you have no more water in the pot. So this is a real conditional, always true. Simple present, simple present. Lastly: "If you study hard, you will pass the test." Simple present verb, "will", verb, like future. So, again, this is a real situation, because this is true. If you do this, this will happen as a result. So these are the ones that you mostly learn. If you have any questions, again, go to www.engvid.com, find the lessons about these that can explain it in more detail. But now we're going to see other situations, other sentences with "if" conditionals that are not like these. Sometimes we can mix tenses, sometimes you can... Sorry. Let me stop myself, here. Sometimes your teachers tell you: "Never put 'will' with the 'if' clause." Well, what I'm going to show you is that sometimes, yeah, you can. This is the problem with English: There's always exceptions to the rules. Today we're going to look at some of those exceptions. Okay? Let's see what happens. Okay. So now we're going to look at a few different types of mixtures, if you want to call it that, with the "if" clauses. But before I start to show you these examples, I want you to understand that these mixed conditionals are all about context. You can generally understand what is going on, what the relationship between the two verbs are by looking at the context, looking at the time, looking at the place, looking at the situation that's going on, and should... It usually should be very clear, but in case you're wondering how to construct these so you can use them yourselves, I'll show you with a few examples. Okay? These are in no particular order. They're just examples, and we're going to look at them individually.

Murderer Gypsy Rose Blanchard 'thriving in jail'

03:55
Gypsy Rose Blanchard sounded happy in the phone call to her best friend, Aleah, as she rattled off the tips she was learning about hair and makeup from her new pals – the type of conversations had by countless young women embarking on a new life chapter or adventure. She was in her mid-20s, and Aleah could tell that Gypsy was feeling free, independent and more mature. But the articulate brunette with a childlike voice was not calling from a college dorm or new city; instead, she was phoning Aleah from prison, and her conversation began with profuse apologies. Gypsy was serving a ten-year sentence in connection with the 2015 murder of her own mother, and her entire friendship with Aleah had been based on lies. For nearly two decades, Gypsy’s mother, Dee Dee, had woven an elaborate web of untruths, telling friends and family across the country that her only daughter suffered from leukemia, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy and a host of other severe health problems. She kept Gypsy’s hair in a buzz cut, lied about her age and said the girl was confined to a wheelchair. Dee Dee presented herself as the ultimate selfless caretaker who devoted every moment to looking after her daughter. Then Gypsy and the boyfriend she found on an internet dating site conspired to kill her in the Missouri home mother and daughter shared; Gypsy hid in the bathroom while her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, fatally stabbed Dee Dee in her bed. The couple fled to his home state of Wisconsin, sparking a massive manhunt as authorities searched for the allegedly disabled teen. The discovery of Gypsy safe and sound – and able-bodied and cancer-free – quickly morphed from relief to shock and disbelief amongst the people who knew her best. She pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for a more lenient sentence, while Godejohn remains in custody awaiting a trial scheduled to start next month. He faces life in prison. Learn Punctuation: period, exclamation mark, question mark

10:30
http://www.engvid.com You see them all the time, but do you know how to use them correctly? In this lesson we go over the basic punctuation marks used to end a sentence. I also teach you to identify and avoid the run-on sentence, which is a common mistake ESL students and native speakers make in their writing. Watch this lesson to learn the quick and easy rules for using the period, exclamation mark, and question mark! Then take the quiz on it here: http://www.engvid.com/learn-punctuation-period-exclamation-mark-question-mark/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome to www.engvid.com again. My name's Adam. Today, I'm responding to some requests for punctuation lessons. So, today's lesson is about punctuation. I'm going to focus on the period, the exclamation mark, and the question mark. Now, you're thinking: why am I beginning with these three? Because these are the ends of sentences. Right? These always come at a very specific point in the sentence, always at the end, always with a clear purpose. What is the purpose? A period ends a sentence. Seems simple enough, everybody knows this. Correct? But it's not that simple. Many, many times I've seen students writing and not putting the period in the correct place. What... Another thing you have to remember about the period is what comes after it is always a capital letter. Okay? Many people forget the capital after a period. A period ends a sentence which means it ends a complete idea. Whatever comes after the period is already a new idea. Of course, one idea flows to the next idea; one idea builds on the previous idea, but they are two separate ideas. When you have completed your sentence, when you have completed your idea - put a period. And British people call this: "a full stop". Same idea, means: full stop, done, next idea. Okay? With a capital letter. Always don't forget the capital letter. Or never forget the capital letter. Okay? Another thing to remember about the period is that once you have a sentence with a complete independent clause and you don't have another independent clause with a conjunction, "and", "but", "so", "or", etcetera or a semi-colon-this is a semi-colon-that means your sentence is finished. If you have two independent clauses in a sentence and you don't have the conjunction, you don't have the semi-colon, means you have a run-on sentence. Okay? A "run-on sentence" is a sentence that has two subjects, two verbs, no spacing, no conjunction, no period. Okay? Let's look at an example of a run-on sentence. "Stacey and Claire went shopping at the mall with Ted and Alex they bought new clothes." Does this sentence seem okay to you? If it does, there's a problem. Okay? We have "Stacey and Claire" as your subject-sorry, this is a "v" actually-"went shopping at the mall". Where? "With Ted and Alex". With who? This is a complete idea. "Stacey and Claire went shopping at the mall with Ted and Alex." Your idea is complete, this is what they did. Now, at the mall, what did they do? "They bought new clothes." I put a period, I put a capital. I have to separate ideas, therefore, two separate sentences. Now, is there any other way I can fix this? Of course. I can put a comma after: "Alex," I could put the word: "and they bought", in which case, that sentence is fine. "And" joins two independent. So, every time you're writing... Punctuation, of course, is for writing, not for speaking; we don't see punctuation in speaking. Every time you write, check your sentences. If you have two independent clauses, means two subject, subject, verb, and then subject, verb. If you have two of these, two combinations of subject and verb without a period between them, without a conjunction, without a semi-colon - you have a run-on sentence. Okay? Just to make sure, here's another sentence. I'll take this away. Something came before. "As a result," -of whatever came before-"the police evacuated the tenants of the building they thought this would be safer." Oh. "The tenants of the building they thought this would be safer." Wait a minute. What's going on? Where does the sentence end? Where does the idea end? What's the next part of the sentence? Okay? "The police evacuated". Who? "The tenants". Which tenants? "Of the building". Okay? "The building they thought this", no. Okay, "The building that they thought this", no, doesn't make sense. So this must be the next subject, "they thought". Who are "they"? The police. "They thought". What? "This would be safer." So now, I need to put something here. I need to break up these two sentences because they're two separate ideas. This sentence explains why they did the action in the first sentence.

"About this Video" Subject And Predicate - Learn English Grammar with Ranjna Vedhera. Subject and Predicate In every sentence we mention a person or thing. And then, we say something about that person or thing. The person or thing we mention is the subject. Whatever we say about the person or thing is the predicate. Look at the sentences below 1. The fisher men are catching fish. 2. I live in Mumbai. 3. Lucy is playing piano. In the first sentence 'the fishermen is the subject' and 'are catching fish' is the predicate which tells us what the subject 'the fishermen' is doing. In the second sentence, 'I' is the subject and 'live in Mumbai' is the predicate. In the third sentence, 'Lucy' is the subject is playing piano is the predicate. The Object A predicate may have two parts. A verb and an object The second noun or pronoun in the sentence is called the object. It receives the action of the subject. Let us look at the First and the third sentences again. In the first sentence, fishermen are catching fish. The fishermen is the subject, 'are catching is the action or the verb and fish is the object'. In the third sentence, Lucy is playing piano, Lucy is the 'subject' and the piano is the 'object'. The subject is connected with the object through the verb in a sentence. Both the verb and the object complete the information about the subject. Only a Noun or Pronoun can be an object. Normally a subject comes before the predicate but in some cases such as proverbs it may come at the end of the subject. For Example: Sweet are the uses of adversity. Subject may be missing in imperative sentences. Keep quiet, Sit down, Stand up etc. Exercise - 1 Separate the subject from the predicate in the following sentences: 1. The boy stood on the bank of a river. 2. The princess has a kind heart. 3. I love eating chocolates. 4. I hate dishonesty. 5. Peter is leaving tomorrow. 6. She has been crying all day. Exercise -- 2 Identity the object in the following; also mention when there is no object: 1. Someone has stolen my watch. 2. I miss my childhood. 3. Why are you crying? 4. All living beings are mortal. 5. I am leaving at once. 6. I am leaving this city. 7. The milk is boiling. 8. Lily is boiling milk. Photosynthesis | Photosynthesis in plants | Photosynthesis - Biology basics for children | Science | elearnin Photosynthesis Hello Kids .... Do you know how plants make their own food? No?? This video elaborates the process of Photosynthesis, by which plants make their own food. Photosynthesis is the process used by the plants to make their food. In simpler terms, conversion of light energy into chemical energy by plants is called photosynthesis. This chemical energy is used by the plants for growth and nourishment. Photo means light and synthesis means putting together. Humans need some essential things like fire, water, vegetables etc to cook food. Similarly, to make their own food, plants also need some essential factors like Light, water, nutrients, soil etc Plants get light from the sun, water from the ground and carbon dioxide from air. All these factors including air, water, carbondioxide and sunlight together help plants churn out their own food. Plants have tubes called Xylem located in the stem through which the water from the ground is sucked into the leaves. This system works similar to the humans sucking in liquids through a straw. The Xylem is spread throughout the different parts of plant including stem, branches, all the way upto their leaves, and transports vital nutrients to the entire plant. Xylems in plants are like blood vessels in the human body that act as an important means of transport for water and nutrients. Leaves on the plants have pores, very similar to pores on the skin of our body. These pores are called stomata. These stomata are responsible for the exchange of gases. The carbon dioxide present in the air, which is responsible for photosynthesis, enters the plant through these stomata. Oxygen also comes out from the same stomata. Leaf has important cells called Mesophyll cells. These cells contain a green color component called chloroplast. This chloroplast is responsible for the green color of plants and leaves. Once the carbon dioxide and water reach the chloroplasts, in the presence of sunlight, the process of photosynthesis starts to take place. The following reaction takes places in the leaves of the plant during photosynthesis: Carbon dioxide + water + [in the presence of light energy] → Oxygen + glucose (or Carbohydrates) The products formed are glucose and oxygen. Carbohydrates, which are a form of glucose, are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water. Glucose is used by the plants for the growth. Some of the glucose is used immediately and the extra glucose which is not used is stored in the form of starch, in the leaves. Some amount of glucose is also stored in the roots of the plants. The extra glucose is used to perform photosynthesis when there is no sunlight. Oxygen is given out into the air through the stomata in the process of photosynthesis. The oxygen that is released is used by human beings to breathe in during their respiration process. Ever wondered why this process is called photosynthesis? The word photosynthesis is a combination of two words: Photo and Synthesis. Photo means light in Greek and Synthesis means putting together or combining. Hence, photosynthesis literally means combining water and carbon dioxide in the presence of light. So, the essential factors for photosynthesis to take place include: • Sunlight • Water • Carbon dioxide Underwater photosynthesis takes place at a slower pace than the normal photosynthesis. This is because energy from the sun is absorbed by the water layers and only some amount of the energy reaches the plant. There are some plants which don't need the process of photosynthesis to grow. Such plants include Mushroom, Venus flytrap etc. Mushroom gets the food from the ground and its surrounding areas. Venus flytrap traps and catches small insects which come near the leaves and eat them.

Barter Definition | Definition of Barter | Barter Explained

19:12
Barter is a system of exchange where goods or services are directly exchanged for other goods or services without using a medium of exchange, such as money. It is distinguishable from gift economies in many ways; one of them is that the reciprocal exchange is immediate and not delayed in time. It is usually bilateral, but may be multilateral (i.e., mediated through a trade exchange) and, in most developed countries, usually only exists parallel to monetary systems to a very limited extent. Barter, as a replacement for money as the method of exchange, is used in times of monetary crisis, such as when the currency may be either unstable (e.g., hyperinflation or deflationary spiral) or simply unavailable for conducting commerce. ………………………………………………………………………………….. Word Stress Rules

07:39
About this Video: So I'm making this video for Mariano Garcia who subscribes to this YouTube channel and follows my weekly videos at www.englishpronunciationroadmap.com. And he posted a comment on one of my videos a couple of weeks ago on intonation and said you know ‘great video but which word in a sentence do I stress?’. He understands that content words versus structural words like grammatical words are more important and to stress so: verbs and nouns and adjectives. But in a typical sentence is there anything I can do to help me know which word i should be putting most of the emphasis on. And you know i'm sure some of you that are watching this video now it sort of asking yourself the same question. There are all of these rules about how to stress a syllable and how to stress a word which are quite useful, but when I got a sentence or a question or a comment or statement or exclamation which word in that sentence or that phrase should I stress. And there are scores and scores of ideas about this and how you should do it in English and in British English. I guess a really simple and straightforward way of thinking about it would be to ask which word in your phrase or in your sentence carries the most important bit of information. And of course that can change depending on the circumstances in which are talking, depending on the person you're talking to, depending on the content of your conversation. And so it's a very flexible thing and I guess requires you to be really specific about what you want the listener to take away: what’s the most important piece of information. And so if you have a look at this question: “did you know that she crashed the car?” just listen to the way in which the meaning of this sentence changes when I stress a different word in the question. So have a listen to this: “DID you know that she crashed the car?” questions whether the other person knew about the event at all. “did YOU know that she crashed the car?” questions in a sort of accusatory way as to whether the other person knew. “did you KNOW that she crashed the car?” questions whether the other person knew for certain. “did you know that SHE crashed the car?” questions whether the other person is sure of who is responsible. “did you know that she CRASHED the cars?” questions whether the other person knew the state of the car. “did you know that she crashed THE car?” questions whether the listener knows that it's the best one. “did you know that she crashed the CAR?” questions whether the other person knew that it was the car that she crashed as opposed to something else. Another way to think about word stress in sentences is to think about tone units. Take a look at this sentence. You can see how the sentence is broken up into units with forward slashes. It’s broken up into these little tone units or what I tend to refer to as phrases. And the main stressed word in each of those tone units or those phrases is often called the tonic syllable. And the word stress rule is that in a typical sentence it tends to be that the tonic syllable/the main stressed word in that unit tends to be the last content word in that sentence. And it certainly holds true in this little example, so have a listen to this: ‘I was WONDERING / whether you might be INTERESTED / in coming to a PLAY that I’m going to. / It’s at the ROYALl / this coming FRIDAY. / It’s about a GUY / who loses EVERYTHING / and DISCOVERS himself. / It’s got really great REVIEWS / and I THOUGHT / that we could go to that Italian PIZZA place / close to the TUBE station. / Their DOUGH-balls / are AMAZING!’ So you can hear how it's the last content word in those phrases that tends to get the main stress or we would say that that's the main stressed word in that tone unit or in that phrase. And that might be another way of thinking about which word should I stress in my sentences. And just two extra things to think about that might be useful is to know that new information in a conversation is always worth stressing so for instance: “have you read the new Dot Hutchison book? No, but have you read the new Matthew Norman book?”. So then you piece of information and in that example it was the new author that gets the stress in the sentence because it's the new piece of information. And the same thing goes for contrasting information in an exchange. So for instance: “I haven't SEEN the new car but I've HEARD about it”, “do you prefer ROSES or LILLIES?” View this post on my website: https://englishpronunciationroadmap.com/word-stress-rules/

What IS Money - 2 of 5 - An Evidentialist View - VFC

14:56
*** VFC-002 *** ** This TextMovie is a Learning Module created for Vasundhara Life Coaching, and is a part of the VASUNDHARA FINANCIAL-FREEDOM COURSE-WORK. Everyone is allowed to use it so long as it is done in order to move towards "Peace in Every Heart" ** Snippets from Narration: - What is money? A question that is extremely easy, and at the same time, extremely difficult to answer for a vast majority of us. - Easy, because each of us learns about its utility and importance at a very young age; yet, difficult because few of us are satisfied with our answers, even at a ripe old age. - So what is it about money that confounds us so? For one, it means different things to different people; secondly, there never is enough of it, no matter how much it is. How is it, that something can have such power over us, that we can never break free from its servitude? - The 'thefreedictionary.com'... 1. A medium that can be exchanged for goods and services and is used as a measure of their values on the market, including among its forms a commodity such as gold, an officially issued coin or note, or a deposit in a checking account or other readily liquefiable account. 2. The official currency, coins, and negotiable paper notes issued by a government. 3. Assets and property considered in terms of monetary value; wealth. The Collins... 1. a medium of exchange that functions as legal tender 2. the official currency, in the form of banknotes, coins, etc., issued by a government or other authority 3. a particular denomination or form of currency 4. property or assets with reference to their realizable value 5. a pecuniary sum or income The Oxford... 1. a current medium of exchange in the form of coins and banknotes; coins and banknotes collectively 2. sums of money 3. the assets, property, and resources owned by someone or something; wealth 4. financial gain 5. payment for work ; wages And now, my favourite, Wikipedia's... • Money is any object that is generally accepted as payment for goods and services and repayment of debts in a given country or socio-economic context. • The main functions of money are distinguished as: o a medium of exchange; o a unit of account; o a store of value; o and, occasionally, a standard of deferred payment. - So, once again, the definition of Money, closer to a user's perspective, I submit, may be... "Money is a representation of potential economic need and want fulfillment". - It is also not necessary to be a high-ranking individual in order to be able to have sex: there are many ways in which one can have sex despite being at or near the bottom of the power pyramid. Of course, that may not guarantee greater passing on of one's genes- but here, we are interested in the sustenance of the individual; not that of the genes. - Needs are predictable. In two ways- the refractory period and the threshold of satisfaction are generally both predictable. - if a gourmet does become a gourmand, he does so, over a very long period of time. - the threshold of desire shifts to what we can marginally ill-afford. - Each want, succeeding a successfully satisfied want, will, as a rule, be substantially greater than its predecessor. - The velocity of this drift, if wants are satisfied, consistently increases in direct proportion to the successes experienced recently. - The logical result of this ever increasing velocity is over-reach. At some point or the other, one's wants reach a stage where they become unsatisfiable. - It seems one does not need power, only the loss of desire, to become God. - velocity of increase of one's wants is directly proportional to the successes experienced. The velocity increases until the over-reach arrives. - fulfillment of a want must mean its extinguishment, not reinvigoration. - ...Siddhartha Gautam owned & earned nothing from the age of 29, yet lived (one of the greatest lives on Earth) for another half century. - ...Street dogs also manage to live lives. How is one to be certain that theirs are not worthier? - Jo poot ho sapoot to kyun dhan sanchay? Jo poot ho kapoot to kyun dhan sanchay? College Spoken Chinese Fast Class Beginning 1 - The quickest way of learning conversational Chinese

04:36
To learn more, go to: https://learning.ly/products/college-spoken-chinese-fast-class-beginning-1-the-quickest-way-of-learning-conversational-chinese I am excited to announce to you that here comes the fastest class for acquiring spoken Chinese. The quickest way of acquiring spoken language is the way we learned a language during our childhood: from mouth to mouth, without any written script. While without an explaining medium language, a baby has to figure out the meaning of the sentences from recurring situations. We, as adult learners, can even further enhance the speed by minimal, explaining medium language (here is English). This course is the first sequel of a four-course "College Spoken Chinese Series: The quickest way of learning conversational Chinese". Each course takes you only 4 hours (30-40 minutes each day for the two dialogues of each lesson, you can finish the course in a week), the four courses will allow you to master spoken Chinese included in two year's college Chinese curriculum (without the written character requirement of course) in just 16 hours. Not just random teaching of some key sentences in a situation, but full-body real-life conversation that encompasses exactly two year's college, Chinese curriculum (based on the same range of vocabulary, grammar and situation dialogues)! Each dialogue is taught in three lectures. The first lecture will teach you the meaning of each phrase and sentence in the dialogue with the help of medium language---English, but the main emphasis is to lead you speak after me through the whole dialogue as soon as you understand them. During this lecture, you may glance at the printed out PDF of the text with its pinyin text for identifying the sound with my talk-head pronunciation, particularly students who have never studied pinyin and not familiar with Chinese pronunciation. In the second lecture, I will lead you to speak through the text twice and practice the dialogue with you in a new, invented context where we act as two sides speaking the dialogue. The third lecture is an acting video in which you can review your dialogue and speak after me again. I didn't put in pinyin subtitles in the talking head videos, because I think it will distract you from recalling the full sentence you speak after me. Instead, you will just spell out the pinyin one by one mechanically, without being able to duplicate the full sentence language out of your memory when you speak after me. After the first lecture, you should not even look at the PDF while speaking after me, you should speak after me like a child learning his/her first language---from mouth to mouth, observing the mouth shape in pronunciation, imitate the pronunciation and tones as closely as possible, draw from memory the whole sentence structure after you’ve heard it, on the spot. That is how you can maximize the speed of learning a spoken language. You will see after four hours; you are able to speak, with near native-speaker accuracy and fluency some major situational dialogues, the content of which a college student has to learn in one full semester (without the written requirement), in five months. After taking this course, you will be able to: You will be able to conduct conversation fluently in all realms of daily life, including greeting, family, time, hobbies, visit friends, make appointments, study Chinese, school life, go shopping, weather, traffic, dining, library, renting an apartment, booking airplane ticket, traveling, etc. You will see after four hours; you are able to speak, with near native-speaker accuracy and fluency some major situational dialogues, the content of which a college student has to learn in one full semester (without the written requirement), in five months. This course is for professionals within the following business functions: This sequence can be for any new-learners of Chinese, but don't mistake it for just new learners! It is immeasurably valuable for those students who have already studied Chinese for years but need to make his/her pronunciation as accurate, his/her speech as fluent as native speakers through the teacher's all-talking head videos emphasizing the mouth shape of pronunciation, the correct tone and sentence cadence that you cannot acquire otherwise.

When and how to use a dictionary – and when NOT to use a dictionary!

20:00
http://www.engvid.com You shouldn't always use a dictionary! In this video, I'll explain when you should use a paper dictionary, an online dictionary, or no dictionary at all! I'll show how to use your dictionary, and answer the question "which dictionary should I use?". A dictionary is an incredible tool when you are learning a language, but knowing how to use it is very important. If you use the dictionary correctly, you can learn a word's definition, spelling, pronunciation, origin, common usage, as well as what part of speech it is. This is a very important lesson for English learners of all levels, and native speakers too. To see if you understood the lesson, take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/when-and-how-to-use-a-dictionary/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. In today's lesson I want to speak with you about: "How to Use a Dictionary". Now, for some of you, this might seem very obvious. You open the dictionary, you look for your word, there it is, everything's good. But it's not that simple. Now, the reason I say it's not that simple is because a lot of people have a problem with exactly how to use a dictionary, and also when to use the dictionary. You don't always need to go look for every word. So, before I look at a few examples of when you should look for a word in the dictionary, I want to stress that if you really, really want to build your vocabulary quickly and have a very wide range of vocabulary, use an English to English dictionary. I'm going to give you a couple of examples of which dictionaries to use after, but English to English. Now, I've had many students who use English to whatever language, English to Spanish, English to Japanese, English to whatever language is their native language and vice versa. This is good for a very quick check, but don't make it a habit. Okay? Get yourself an English to English dictionary-you can get the book, I'll show you one in a second-or get online and find the apps for the more common dictionaries. Now, the reason I say this is because you will have to look for meanings of words, and if you don't understand the explanation of the meaning, you will probably learn more words in that explanation and then you can look those up. So you're actually going to build your vocabulary exponentially. "Exponentially", very quickly and to a large degree, without end, so you can go very quickly. So, let's look at three sentences, and I underlined the words we're focusing on. Okay? "Salivate", "plethora", "mitigate". Now, you may know these words, you may not, but these are a little bit higher end words, they're not very common. So we're going to think about what to do. First, use context. What I want you to do is I want you to try to guess the meaning of a word before you go to the dictionary. "The hungry dog began to salivate when it saw the steak on the table." Now, most of you have seen a dog, most of you have probably seen a hungry dog. Now, you think of a hungry dog, you think of a steak, what do most dogs do? Even what do humans do? Dogs do it more obviously, they start to salivate. They start... The little wet stuff comes out of their mouths. Right? That wet stuff is "saliva". Dogs have it, you have it, I have it, human beings have it, too. It helps us to eat and digest our food. Now, because of the context, because you have a hungry dog and because you have a steak, it seems pretty obvious that "salivate" means to start emitting or getting... Letting out saliva. Now, another thing to keep in mind: The next sentence will probably use this word, "saliva". So: "The dog began to salivate, and all the saliva gathered in a pool on the floor. So then when I walked by it and I slipped and hurt myself, it's the dog's fault, not my fault." Okay? So, now, do I need to or should you go look at this...? Look for this word in the dictionary? No. You can guess the sentence. You probably are right in your guess of what this means. The next sentence will probably confirm it. Just move on. Don't worry about this word. It's easy. Now you have a new word in your head. But let's look at the next word: "The forum was a grand success as it had generated a plethora of ideas." Now, you have a forum. A "forum" is where people exchange ideas or where they have discussions. On the internet, there are plenty of forums. At www.engvid.com, there's a forum where you can ask questions, and teachers help, and other students help. So, if the forum has all these ideas and it was a grand success - why? Because it had generated, it had made or created a plethora of ideas. Now, you can probably guess what this means. A "plethora" means many and varied. So, a large amount or a large number, and a varied number.
