Urbex: Exploring Abandoned Centralia, PA Ghost Town Burning Underground

08:50
*UPDATE* The time capsule ended up being opened on October 4, 2014 which was much earlier than expected. Centralia, PA is a modern day ghost town with an ongoing underground inferno. Silent Hill was inspired by Centralia's plight. It was also a model for various movies that wanted to give a hell-like appearance in a ghost town. There used to be a WARNING - DANGER sign posted here from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania stating that walking or driving in this area could result in serious injury or death; that dangerous gases are present and the ground is prone to sudden collapse. Centralia was once a prosperous coal mining town with 1,100 population. It included 4 movie theatres, 7 bars, a school and a gas station. In the spring of 1962, a fire which started at the town dump during spring cleanup ignited the coal present at the ground level as this area is very rich in coal. As firefighters worked to try and extinguish that fire, it had already spread to the underground abandoned coal tunnels that are 100 meters in depth. After a couple of decades, attempts to put out the fire failed. State and federal authorities said they didn't have enough funding to do the job right. They tried digging up the coal around the burn site but it was burning faster than they could dig and there are too many tunnels too flood. Approximately 450 acres of underground coal has been on fire since. This type of coal is called anthracite which is difficult to ignite, but very difficult to extinguish. There are 3000 acres of coal field here underground, so with enough oxygen feeding this fire from other mining tunnels, the fire is expected to last at least another 100-200 years, maybe longer. The temperature of the active burn area below ground is 1100-1200 degrees Farhenheit. Tests by scientists and geologists were done here that showed the ground temperature to be around 440 degrees Celsius a foot into the ground. With the threats of hydrogen explosions, carbon monoxide and cave-ins, most residents were relocated in the 80s. The houses were then torn down leaving approximately 11 people behind who refused to evacuate despite the danger and risks involved such as dangerous gasses, explosions and sink holes. The ground beneath could collapse and has done so already. Looking down the now-empty streets, you can see that nature has reclaimed her land, albeit, a dangerous one. Buildings, cars and trees can fall into this pit at any time. The old Hwy 61 that used to bring traffic to Centralia has been destroyed by the underground fire. It is constantly subsiding with smoke usually billowing out from the pits and separations that will continue to get wider and deeper day-by-day. This is called subsidence. This is due to the coal seams the run below ground at steep angles which cause the road above ground to collapse as the coal burns. According to engineers, the only way to stop this fire is to dig the entire 3000 acres of coal field under this town and surrounding area. This would cost $600 million which is more than the US governments were willing to pay. Ironically, a small town just south of Centralia, Byrnesville (of all names) was also evacuated and now empty. Mostly coal miners resided here of an Irish-Catholic desent. Both Centralia and Byrnesville were a tight-knit community, and many did not want to leave. There is a time capsule that still lies buried in the ground in Centralia. This was set up as a memorial for the working class town to be opened in 2016 which would be Centralia's 150th Anniversary. Whether the residents return to open it on that date is yet to be seen. The Weather Channel selected portions of this video for their "Most Toxic Ghost Towns" video. Mongols Shirts and Crash Course Posters! http://store.dftba.com/collections/crashcourse In which John Green wraps up revolutions month with what is arguably the most revolutionary of modern revolutions, the Industrial Revolution. While very few leaders were beheaded in the course of this one, it changed the lives of more people more dramatically than any of the political revolutions we've discussed. So, why did the Industrial Revolution happen around 1750 in the United Kingdom? Coal. Easily accessible coal, it turns out. All this, plus you'll finally learn the difference between James Watt and Thomas Newcomen, and will never again be caught telling people that your blender has a 900 Newcomen motor. Clinton's coal comments could boost Sanders in West Virginia

05:38
With West Virginia’s economy battered by a coal industry in free fall, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is hoping that a strong showing in this state’s Democratic primary on Tuesday will keep him a force in the party’s politics by showing that his message still resonates, even though his rival, Hillary Clinton, has an almost insurmountable lead in delegates. As Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Sanders have campaigned here in recent weeks, they have found frustrated voters who express the kinds of anxieties heard all across the country — only with a far greater degree of urgency and pain, as they see their communities wither before their eyes. “We just don’t want to be forgotten,” said Betty Dolin, who co-owns a restaurant in Danville, about 20 miles southwest of Charleston, where customers tucked into hearty meals like meatloaf and country fried steak with gravy. She pointed out the empty tables that would once have been filled. “We can’t have coal? Bring us something else,” she said. “And I don’t mean job training. A lot of these men are too old to train for another job.” Presidential primaries tend to bring attention to local issues as candidates move from state to state, and as the candidates have come to West Virginia to campaign, coal has been no exception. “These communities need help,” Mr. Sanders said last week at a food bank in McDowell County. “It is not the coal miners’ fault in terms of what’s happening in this world.” In some ways, Mr. Sanders is not a natural candidate to be courting the votes of coal miners: He is outspoken on climate change and advocates moving away from fossil fuels. But his message of economic fairness has been embraced by white, working-class voters. Mr. Sanders has proposed legislation that would provide $41 billion to help coal and other fossil fuel workers and their communities, offering support like financial assistance and job training. Mrs. Clinton has her own $30 billion plan to help coal miners and their communities, including a program to provide funding to local school districts to help make up for lost revenue. But what people here bring up is a comment she made about coal workers in March, when she said during a televised forum, “We’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.” She was talking about providing opportunity through clean energy, and she emphasized that coal miners must not be left behind, but the sound bite was a damning one. When Mrs. Clinton visited Mingo County last week, she was met with chants of “Go home!” from protesters. At a round-table event, Bo Copley, a 39-year-old father who had lost his job in the coal industry, told her, “I just want to know how you can say you’re going to put a lot of coal miners out of jobs and then come in here and tell us how you’re going to be our friend.” But it offended voters in struggling coal communities, and a candidate for West Virginia’s Supreme Court even used it in a campaign ad. “A lot of people that I know are laid off, and you know that had to hurt the people,” said Janet White, 80, a librarian whose husband was a coal miner. With Donald J. Trump having vanquished his two remaining primary opponents last week, the Republican contest here holds little significance, but when Mr. Trump campaigned in West Virginia, he found a receptive audience. At a rally in Charleston last week, he donned a hard hat given to him by an industry group that had endorsed him, the West Virginia Coal Association, and mimicked shoveling coal. “My hair look O.K.?” he asked after taking the hat off. Mr. Trump gushed about mining, telling the crowd that he was fascinated by it and promising to revive the industry. “You watch what happens: If I win, we’re going to bring those miners back,” he said. “You’re going to be so proud of your president.” He did not explain how he would go about doing that. The signs of the state’s economic distress are all over, particularly in areas known for coal production, like Boone County, south of Charleston. In the window of a barbershop and beauty salon in Madison is a yellow sign: “We support coal and those who mine it!” But inside, Barbara Bias had no customers. The wives of coal miners used to come in with money to spend, she said. Not anymore. “Boone County used to be booming, and now there’s nothing,” she said. “This is a ghost town, because when the coal goes out, it hurts all of us.” In the last quarter of 2011, West Virginia had about 24,700 coal mining jobs; by the last quarter of 2015, that number had fallen to about 14,500, a decline of more than 40 percent, according to an analysis by S&P Global Market Intelligence. SUBSCRIBE to receive more videos for free. 5th west virginia jail guard suspended after inmate's escape CHARLESTON, W.Va. –  West Virginia corrections officials said Friday that they have suspended a fifth jail guard without pay following an inmate escape early Oct. 25 that wasn't noticed for about 36 hours. Inmate Todd Wayne Boyes, 44, of Caldwell, Ohio, escaped from the South Central Regional Jail in Charleston, two days before his scheduled sentencing on charges including fleeing and possession of a stolen car. He was facing up to 20 years in prison. Boyes initially was charged with attempted murder after a Charleston police officer was hurt during a pursuit to arrest him, but that charge was dropped in a September plea deal. The state's Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority said it doesn't expect to comment further on the suspensions until its internal investigation is complete. Four guards were suspended last week. It also said the system's medical provider, PrimeCare, has advised it had fired an employee assigned to the jail. PrimeCare chief executive Thomas Weber said ...

US Navy has stopped producing this Ultimate Submarine Russia or China Still Can't Beat

12:22
The Seawolf-class submarines were envisioned as the best submarines ever built. Designed to succeed the Los Angeles–class attack submarines and maintain America’s edge in the underwater domain, the class suffered from cost overruns and the collapse of the Soviet Union. While still some of the best submarines ever built, they were built at reduced numbers. In many respects, they are the F-22 of submarines: widely considered the world's best, but costs made wide their wide usage a major challenge. In the late 1980s, the U.S. Navy was faced with a crisis. In 1980, the Soviet Union had received information from the Walker family spy ring that the Navy could track its submarines through excessive propeller noise. As a result, the Soviet Union went looking for advanced Western machinery to make better propellers. In 1981, the Japanese company Toshiba sold propeller milling machinery—now relatively common nine-axis CNC milling machines—to the Soviet Union via the Norwegian Kongsberg corporation. By the mid-1980s, the Soviet Union’s new machinery began to make itself felt. The new Akula-class submarines had a “steep drop in broadband acoustic noise profiles”. One government source told the Los Angeles Times, “the submarines started to get silent only after the Toshiba stuff went in.” On top of running silent, the Akula class could dive to depths of up to two thousand feet—while the U.S. Navy’s frontline submarines, the Los Angeles class, could dive to only 650 feet. To combat the threat of the Akula class, the U.S. Navy responded with the Seawolf class of nuclear attack submarines. The Seawolf submarines were designed with HY-100 steel alloy hulls two inches thick, the better to withstand the pressures of deep diving. HY-100 steel is roughly 20 percent stronger than the HY-80 used in the Los Angeles class. As a result, the submarines are capable of diving to depths of up to two thousand feet, and crush depth estimates run from 2,400 to 3,000 feet. At 353 feet, Seawolf subs were designed to be slightly shorter than their predecessors, by just seven feet, but with a twenty percent wider beam, making them forty feet wide. This width made them substantially heavier than the subs before them, topping the scales at 12,158 tons submerged. The Seawolf submarines are each powered by one Westinghouse S6W nuclear reactor, driving two steam turbines to a total of 52,000 shaft horsepower. The class was the first class of American submarine to utilize pump-jet propulsors over propellers, a feature that has carried over to the newest Virginia class. As a result, a Seawolf is capable of eighteen knots on the surface, a maximum speed of 35 knots underwater, and a silent running speed of about 20 knots. The Seawolf class is equipped with the BQQ 5D sonar system, which features a twenty-four-foot-diameter bow-mounted spherical active and passive array as well as wide-aperture passive flank arrays. The submarines are being refitted with TB-29A thin-line towed array sonar systems. Rounding out sonar systems is the BQS 24, for detection of close-range objects such as mines. The ship’s original combat data system was the Lockheed Martin BSY-2, which uses a network of seventy Motorola 68030 processors—the same processor that drove early Macintosh computers—and is now being replaced with the AN/BYG-1 Weapons Control System. The submarines were designed to be true hunters, and as a result have eight torpedo tubes, double the number of earlier submarines. It has stores for up a combination of up to fifty Mark 48 heavyweight torpedoes, Sub-Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and Tomahawk missiles. Alternatively, it can substitute some of this ordnance for mines. Read more: https://goo.gl/LGp2Uc

Trump says America's allies must pay fair share for U.S. defense

02:06
트럼프 "나토-태평양동맹 방위비 공정분담해야" U.S. President Donald Trump has laid out his administration's key initiatives in his first Congressional address. The hour-long speech largely focused on domestic issues, but he stressed that America's allies, such as South Korea and Japan,... should stump up more in return for military support. Oh Soo-young has the details. Giving his first speech to Congress on Tuesday,... President Trump made it clear that America's allies must pay their fair share for U.S. military support. "We strongly support NATO, an alliance forged through the bonds of two World Wars that dethroned fascism, and a Cold War that defeated communism. But our partners must meet their financial obligations. And now, based on our very strong and frank discussions, they are beginning to do just that." President Trump pledged to "rebuild the U.S. military" with one of the largest increases in spending seen in American history,... effectively reversing the defense sequester. He also condemned the recent wave of hate crimes in the country and the threat posed by "radical Islamic terrorism", vowing to take steps to protect the United States and -quote- "extinguish" the so-called Islamic State group. President Trump, however, did not mention North Korea at all during his hour-long address. Much of his address was focused on renewing the American spirit. "The people turned out by the tens of millions, and they were all united by one very simple, but crucial demand, that America must put its own citizens first... because only then, can we truly make America great again." President Trump outlined his vision to reform the immigration system as a means to keep out extremism,... as well as his plans to repeal Obamacare and slash taxes for companies and middle class families. Third Transition Series: Extraction of Gold | Occurrence and Principles | Properties

06:37
Occurrence and principles of extraction of gold Atomic mass : 196.97 Valency : 1 and 3 Atomic number : 79 Symbol : Au Position in the periodic table : Period Number -6, Group Number -11. Occurrence Gold is mainly found in the native state either mixed with quartz in ancient rocks (vein gold) or scattered in sand and gravel (placer gold) or in the alluvial sand (alluvial gold). Ores The important ore of gold is Alluvial sand or gravel Nearly half of the total world production of gold comes from the mines in South Africa. India occupies 8th position among the gold producing countries of the world and account for about 2% of the total world production. The Kolar mines in Karnataka produce about 99.97% of our gold output. Extraction from Gold Ores - Mac Arthur Forrest Cyanide Process. The extraction of gold from the sulphide or telluride ore involves the following steps : i) Crushing, grinding and concentration The gold ore is crushed and powdered, and then concentrated by frothfloatation process. ii) Roasting The concentrated ore is roasted in excess of air or oxygen when impurities of sulphur, arsenic and tellurium are oxidised and escape as their volatile oxides. iii) Treatment with KCN The finely powdered roasted ore is taken in large vats made up of cement or iron and having false wooden bottoms with holes. It is then treated with a dilute (0.5%) solution of KCN in presence of excess of air for 24 hours. As a result, gold dissolves in KCN to form a soluble complex called potassium aurocyanide. Gold plus potassium cyanide plus water plus oxygen gives Potassium aurocyanide plus potassium hydroxide. iv) Precipitation of gold The above solution containing potassium aurocyanide is filtered to remove insoluble impurities and then treated with zinc dust. Gold being less electropositive than zinc, it gets precipitated. Potassium aurocynade plus zinc gives potassium tetracyano zincate plus gold. The precipitated gold is recovered by filtration .It is further purified by electrorefining. iv) Electrolytic refining This method is used when very pure gold is required. The impure gold is made the anode while a thin sheet of pure gold acts as the cathode. The electrolyte consists of a solution of auric chloride (AuCl3) acidified with 10-12% HCl. On passing current pure gold gets deposited on the cathode. Physical properties of gold i) Gold is a lustrous yellow metal which melts at 1063°Celcious to a green liquid and boils at 2610°Celcious. ii) It is the most malleable and ductile of all metals. iii) It is a good conductor of heat and electricity. Chemical properties of gold i) Gold is unaffected by dry or moist air or oxygen. ii) Alkalies have no action on gold. iii) With Aquaregia Gold dissolves in aquaregia (3 parts of concentrates Hydrochloric acid plus one part of concentrated nitric acid to form auric chloride. Gold plus hydrochloric acid plus nitric acid gives auric chloride plus nitrosyl chloride. iv) With chlorine At 200°Celcious, gold is readily attacked by chlorine forming auric chloride. Gold plus chlorine gives gold three chloride or auric chloride

Trump is blaming everyone else for the America’s high drug prices. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, Aida Rodriguez, Maytha Alhassen, the hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Read more here: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/11/trump-is-targeting-medicare-drug-prices-heres-what-part-d-coverage-costs.html “With President Trump on Friday outlining his plan to lower prescription drug prices for Medicare recipients, you might wonder if it means other costs related to your coverage will come down. Don't count on it. As it stands, exactly what Medicare beneficiaries pay for prescription drug coverage depends on the specifics of the plan they choose and their income. And while some drugs could cost less under Trump's plan — which is expected to echo proposals already floated in the administration's proposed fiscal year 2019 budget — there's a chance insurers could react to any reduced revenue by eyeing their customers' wallets. "They might shift costs to plan enrollees through higher premiums and deductibles, or shifting drugs to higher [cost] tiers," said Mary Johnson, Social Security and Medicare policy analyst for The Senior Citizens League.” Hosts: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, Aida Rodriguez, Maytha Alhassen Cast: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, Aida Rodriguez, Maytha Alhassen *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. ch 18) The Impossible Victory: Vietnam

01:33:16
chapter 18: A People's History (Of The United States) Howard Zinn. ~ Chapter 18, "The Impossible Victory: Vietnam", covers the Vietnam War and resistance to it. Zinn argues that America was fighting a war that it could not win, as the Vietnamese people were in favor of the government of Ho Chi Minh and opposed the regime of Ngo Dinh Diem, thus allowing them to keep morale high. Meanwhile, the American military's morale was very low, as many soldiers were put off by the atrocities they were made to take part in, such as the My Lai massacre. Zinn also tries to dispel the popular belief that opposition to the war was mainly among college students and middle-class intellectuals, using statistics from the era to show higher opposition from the working class. Zinn argues that the troops themselves also opposed the war, citing desertions and refusals to go to war, as well as movements such as Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Also covered is the US invasions of Laos and Cambodia, Agent Orange, the Pentagon Papers, Ron Kovic, and raids on draft boards.
