Cripple Creek Gold was mined as a chemical process which they still do today, as well as finding veins and deposits of it, even nuggets.
My first thought was what I now see in the comments below, Pyrite. There are several ways to tell if you want to know for sure, I am 99% sure just FYI.

I live and am a 3rd generation miner in cripple creek, that's iron pyrite

My father almost became the sheriff of Cripple Creek back in the sixties. My mother could not take the altitude so he turned down the job.
